Riverdene Garden Centre There’s just something magical about being surrounded by plants. Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada. Welcome and thanks for visiting our page.

We are a family owned and operated greenhouse located in southwest Saskatchewan in the thriving community of Swift Current. The greenhouse has a long history, established by Vern Smith in 1954, purchased by Sherman & Doreen Lyngstad in 1986. Still at the original location and still using the original buildings, we strive for consistent high quality in every plant we produce.

Russian Sage is back in stock!

'That plant at the flag court that's silvery purple ' is this one!

Drought tolerant (once established), woody perennial, lavender-blue flowers that attract pollinators. Mature size is 3-5' tall and 2-4' wide. Does best in full sun with well draining soil. Avoid soggy soils which can cause root or stem rot.

This has been extremely popular the last few years, and the last batch we had lasted just a couple days.

Come in and grab yours before it's gone!

Have you been struggling? I sure have..

The moments I've had to do some yard work or my pots, it's either raining or windy. I'm going offer up all the bench space we've got to you! Bring your pots from home (or you can check out what we've got if you need a new one) and plant your planters in the dry under our roof! Try different combinations out before committing, that's how I like to trial my planters.

Just pay for the plants and soil you use!

If I wanted to plant some trees and shrubs, this would be the spring to do it.

All this rain we've been getting helps our newly planted trees and shrubs in more than one way.

1. Replenish soil moisture. Extra moisture in the soil means less watering required by YOU!
2. Better root establishment. Roots grow into soil moisture, so they will establish easier before the heat of the summer hits.
3. Less transplant shock. Cooler, cloudy conditions means less wilting and stress on the plant.
4. A less stressful establishing spring on the plant, means it's stronger and better prepared for the heat in the summer months.

A couple things to be aware of.
1. Do not plant into water-logged should. Roots need oxygen and will rot in saturated soil.
2. Do not work soil that is muddy enough to stick together. This can cause compaction which affects root growth and how water moves through the soil.
3. Continue checking soil moisture (even though it's a wet spring). Sheltered areas (under overhangs or trees) can remain surprisingly dry.

Fuchsia

Caring for your fuchsia. Fuchsia prefer shade conditions (morning sun at the most) and should be protected from our wind. They are great for attracting hummingbirds and colour to your shady space.

The blooms on the trailing varieties can be large and heavy at times, so you may need to do some pruning throughout the summer in case a branch breaks.

Keep soil evenly moist (don't let it dry out too much) and fertilize once every 2 weeks.

EDIT to my video. The Fuchsia standards (tree form) we had at the beginning of the season are back in stock and look amazing! You can be sure I've got one set aside this time!

We've also still got a few of the hanging baskets in stock!

Shrub of the day.. Ninebark!

Ninebark is great in full to part sun for adding unique and foliage colours to your space. It blooms in late spring, but it's generally chosen for its footage rather than flowers.

Drought tolerant once established, it comes in a variety of sizes and colours.

Notice the bark appears to be peeling on some of the older branches? This is completely normal and just a trait of the shrub!

Perennial of the Day - Salvia

Perennial salvia comes in a variety of colours including blue/purple, pink and white. It's great for attracting pollinators, great for full sun locations, and can handle dry locations once established. Snip off the spent flowers at the base to encourage continuous flowering.

If you enjoy seeing butterflies, bees and hummingbirds in your yard, this is the perennial for you!

GERANIUMS

Martha Washington/Regal - great for spring and early summer blooms, the varieties we carry have bicoloured petals, easy to dead head, unique.
Zonal Geraniums - great heat tolerance throughout the summer, wide range in colours. Presto, Fantasia and Dynamo are the zonal varieties we carry.
Ivy Geraniums - great in hanging baskets and mixed containers. Have a mounded to trailing habit with smaller flower clusters than the zonal.
Calliope Geraniums - large flower size like the zonal, but similar growth habit to the ivy, making them a colorful impact in your hanging baskets.

Geraniums are a great addition to your sunny containers for a pop of colour. Easy to care for, they'll last all summer long.

Mosquito Repellent

Plants commonly used to try and repel mosquitos include scented geraniums, lemon verbena, lemon balm, lavender, marigolds, agastache, lantana and lemon grass. These plants contain scented oils in their foliage that when crushed, may repel mosquitos.

Mosquito Barrier is a garlic spray used to repel mosquitos and ticks. Mosquitos and ticks are repelled by the odour. Available in ready to use and concentrate.

While the rain is great to have, standing water is the actual breeding ground for mosquitos and we are going to have a summer of it!
