Kevin Callan, the guy behind the KCHappyCamper YouTube channel with over 33,000 subscribers, will be teaching at Frontenac Outfitters this weekend!

Kevin Callan has spent a lifetime canoe tripping across Canada, and nearly as long teaching people how to do it well.

He's written over 20 books, including the best-selling The Happy Camper. He's a longtime Explore Magazine columnist, a National Magazine Award winner, the go-to camping voice on CBC Radio, and ! The Canadian Geographical Society named him one of the top 100 modern day explorers. Paddle Canada made him a Patron Paddler.

He's also genuinely funny, the kind of teacher who makes you want to load up the canoe and leave tonight.

On August 8 and 9, he's teaching a full day in person, right here on our lakefront.

A book can't answer your question. A video can't watch you tie a knot and tell you what you're doing wrong. This is a whole day to ask him anything, watch him demonstrate, and try it yourself, whether it's your first trip or your fiftieth.

New on the blog: What to Bring on Your First Backcountry Canoe Trip.

Most first trips go sideways for the same few reasons, and almost none of them come down to having the best gear. Sleep warm, stay dry, treat your water, and get it all across the portage in one carry.

The guide covers the boat, the sleep system, the kitchen, packs, and the one clothing rule that matters more than anything else on the list. It also covers what you can rent from us instead of buying, because a first trip shouldn't start with a full kit purchase.

Two Level Two Sea Kayaking courses, four spots left between them.

Level Two is where paddlers with solid fundamentals learn to handle rough water, run rescues under pressure, and make the calls that keep a day on the water from going wrong.

Our six day Georgian Bay course includes a wilderness tripping portion and starts in under two weeks. Two spots open.
Our four day course in the Kingston area runs less than a month out. Two spots open.

Small groups. If you've been meaning to take this step, this is the season for it.

This is happening NEXT WEEKEND, and there's still time to get in.

Kevin Callan, aka The Happy Camper, is teaching a full day canoe tripping workshop on our lakefront August 8 and 9. He's got 30+ years in the backcountry and 20 books to his name, and he's spending a day passing it all on.

Who's it for? Anyone heading into the wild, or wishing they were. First trip ever? You're exactly who this is built for. Been at it for years? You'll pick up tricks you didn't know you were missing. No experience needed, and rentals are available if you don't have a canoe.

In one day, you'll cover route planning, packing light, campsite selection, fire lighting, navigation, water purification, staying warm and dry, and how to deal with bugs, bears, blisters, and storms.

Getting back into your kayak after a capsize is a learnable skill. But the traditional method leans hard on upper body strength, and that's where it gets tricky if you're out of practice, working around an injury, or just not built to haul yourself over a deck.

A paddle stirrup takes that part out of the equation.

In our newest video, Zack shows how the stirrup and paddle float work together to turn the climb into a simple step up, using your legs instead of your arms. It's a small piece of nylon webbing that lives in your PFD pocket, and it makes a real difference when you need it.

Worth carrying whether you paddle solo or paddle with a group. Consider it part of your emergency kit and be prepared in case someone in your party can't manage a rescue on their own.

Headwind Yoga is $10 off for the rest of the season.

SUP Yoga is now $30. SUP Fit is now $20 (a full body fitness class on the water).

If you've been curious but never quite got around to it, this is the time to find out what all the fun is about. The water does half the work, the instruction handles the rest, and you don't need any paddling experience to show up.

Only a handful of classes left before the season wraps.

Kevin Callan is back on our lakefront this August.

One full day with The Happy Camper covering the stuff that actually makes or breaks a canoe trip. Route planning, packing light, picking a campsite that doesn't flood, lighting a fire in the rain, navigation, and staying warm and dry when the forecast turns on you.

Groups are kept small, so you get real answers to your own questions instead of a lecture from the back row.

Saturday August 8th or Sunday August 9th, 9 am to 4 pm. Both dates are open. If you checked earlier and saw one showing as sold out, that was a listing error on our end.

Canoe rentals available for participants at a reduced rate.
