I’m VERY excited that I was able to get copies of this one for the store.

Let’s be honest — how many of us really understand the treaty system where we live?

We hear words like treaty rights, unceded territory, Indigenous sovereignty, Land Back and reconciliation — but how many of us could confidently explain what they actually mean, or what our own responsibilities are?

Talk Treaty to Me by Crystal Gail Fraser and Sara Komarnisky is a national bestseller written specifically to make this incredibly important subject accessible.

It looks at the history of treaties in Canada, Indigenous sovereignty, unceded territory, land acknowledgements, reconciliation, Land Back, and the ways treaties continue to shape the lives of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people today.

And this matters here.

We live, work, raise our families and run our businesses in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. Understanding what that actually means is part of understanding the place we call home.

Books like this belong in bookstores, They give us the opportunity to learn things many of us simply weren’t taught.

I was only able to get FOUR copies, and they’ll be on the shelf tomorrow. 😊

If you’ve ever wanted to better understand treaties, reconciliation and our responsibilities as Canadians, this seems like a very good place to start.

A little shop update! 📚

You guys have brought us so many wonderful used books lately that, quite frankly, we are OVERBOOKED. 😂

It’s a very good problem for a bookstore to have, but we need a little time to work through the stock we already have. So for the moment, we are taking a break from purchasing used books.

If you have books you’ve been hoping to bring in, hang onto them! I’ll post again in the coming weeks if we’ve made enough room to start buying.

And one other little shop note…

You may have noticed that some of our newer graphics look a little less polished than they have in the past. That’s intentional.

We’re trying our best to move away from using AI-generated artwork and graphics. You may still see an older post or graphic pop up that has that AI look to it, but going forward, we’re trying to make our flyers and signage ourselves — even if that means they’re occasionally a little wonky. 😂

We’ve made the decision that we won’t carry books written using generative AI, and it felt important to try to practice what we preach when it comes to the creative work we put out into the world, too.

Thanks for bearing with us while we figure it out — and thanks for keeping this tiny bookstore so incredibly well supplied with books!

📚 AUTHOR SIGNING — GARY BLACKWOOD!

We’re very excited to welcome Gary Blackwood to Once Upon a Bookshoppe on Saturday, September 19th from 11–1!

Many readers will know Gary as the author of The Shakespeare Stealer and numerous other novels, and he’ll be joining us to sign copies of his newest book, The Devil to Pay.

And this one is SO intriguing.

Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, The Devil to Pay follows a graduate student who discovers an encrypted Renaissance journal hidden away in a university rare book room. What begins as an academic puzzle quickly turns into something much more dangerous — with codes, ciphers, a centuries-old mystery, a mysterious rival, and secrets someone is willing to do just about anything to possess.

Basically… mysterious old books + historical secrets + code breaking + danger? Yes please.

Copies will be available at the shop for $20, cash only, and Gary will be here to sign them!

Come by, meet a wonderful local author, pick up a signed book, and help us celebrate another example of the incredible literary talent we have right here in Nova Scotia. ❤️

As you all know, I’m a huge fan of our local talent.

We are absolutely spoiled here on the North Shore with some of the most incredible storytellers — and while those stories often arrive at the Bookshoppe between the covers of a book, sometimes they come to us in a different form. ❤️

Today, I’m thrilled to say we have something new on our shelves — From a Rocky Nova Scotian Shore, an album from local musician Ross O’Ciarmhaic!

And you should absolutely come in and grab a copy.

I’ll be playing the album in the shop today and tomorrow, so you can have a listen while you browse. We only have a limited number of copies available, and I would LOVE to see our community show up and support another talented local artist.

Books, music, art — stories are stories, however we choose to tell them.

Come discover this one. ❤️

September is looking pretty busy around here! 📚
After such a fun time last night at our Workshop…
We’ve got some really fun things coming up this month — a Grown Up Bookfair at Tata Brew, a visit and signing with author Gary Blackwood, and our September Book Club!

Mark your calendars, grab a friend, and come spend some time with your fellow book people. ❤️

We’d love to see you there!

Okay, okay… we know. It’s September. 😂

But we run this special year-round, and with so many people starting to think ahead about holiday shopping, we wanted to make sure you knew about it!

📚 THE CANADA-WIDE BLIND DATE SPECIAL!

For $95 + tax, we’ll put together a bookish package that includes:

4 Blind Dates with a Book
All the usual Blind Date goodies tucked inside
PLUS some extra goodies to make the package even more fun
PLUS shipping anywhere in Canada is included!

And the best part? You don’t have to choose the books.

Tell us a little about the recipient — their favourite genres, authors, books they’ve loved (or absolutely hated 😂) — and we’ll curate their Blind Dates specifically for them. Or honestly, just let us go rogue and pick a variety of titles!

Perfect for Christmas, birthdays, thank-you gifts, care packages, or a completely unnecessary but highly encouraged “just because” present.

This also comes as four distinctly wrapped presents- so it could be a gift for a household…
And with so many of us talking about trying to make our holiday shopping a little more Canadian-made and locally supported this year, this is one easy way to do it. You’re supporting a tiny independent bookstore right here in Nova Scotia while sending someone you love an entire box of bookish happiness. ❤️

Available year-round and shipped anywhere in Canada!
