Welcome back to !

Last week's object was a telegraph line insulator made with blue glass. These insulators were mounted on trees and wooden poles to hold telegraph wire and keep the wire away from the wood. These little artifacts played an important part in Terrace's communication history!

This week's object is stands at about 3 feet tall. Can you guess what it is?

Come back next week to find out if you guessed right!

Welcome back to (Thursday)!

Last week we posted a vintage Art Deco “Beau Brummel” tilting liquid soap dispenser! These fixtures were once highly popular commercial installations, with thousands installed in luxury, high-traffic public spaces. The embossed glass globe was designed to tilt forward, allowing liquid soap to drop into your hands. The distribution lever was weighted so that, once released, the globe would naturally swing back into its original position. The mechanism was patented in the early 20th century.

This week, the object features a dome-shaped body made of porcelain and brass. Can you guess what it is and what it was used for? Come back next week to find out if you were right!

Time for another Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that Terrace was once famous for growing extra large strawberries? They were called the “Skeena Wonders,” which became a major part of the region’s early agricultural history. These strawberries were so large that just 7 to 9 berries could fill an entire basket! Their late-ripening season gave local farmers an advantage, helping create a booming farm economy in the Skeena River Valley. In the early 1900s, and especially around the 1920s, refrigerated railway cars were used to ship these giant strawberries to markets as far away as Winnipeg, Chicago, Vancouver, and Prince Rupert. The success and reputation of these enormous berries helped put Terrace’s agricultural community on the map and contributed to the area being described as a “Sunny Mountain Oasis.” Today, the story of the Skeena Wonder remains a fascinating piece of Terrace’s local farming heritage and a reminder of the important role agriculture once played in the Skeena Valley. Stop by Heritage Park Museum to see the strawberry plants for yourself!

Do you grow strawberries in your garden?

Time for What is it Wednesday!

Last week we posted grinding balls, also called grinding media. These balls were used in industrial mining as tumbling tools to crush and grind extracted rocks and ore down into a fine powder. The powder would then be chemically or physically separated to extract the valuable metals from the worthless rock.

The object this week is pictured in its original package, and the package is 19 cm tall and 7 cm wide. Do you know what the artifact inside could be? Leave your guesses in the comments!

Check next weeks What is it Wednesday post to see if you were right.
