Fun Fact!
Did you know that the Janitor's Warehouse building at 4545 Lakelse Avenue was the location of a dramatic bank robbery?
In the 1950s, the building was home to a branch of the Royal Bank of Canada. On June 24th 1958, two armed men wearing masks burst through the doors and demanded that the staff fill their bags with cash. The staff complied, and once the bags were full the two robbers fled through the back entrance.
In order to make their escape, the robbers ran south to the edge of the river where they had left a small motorboat. After climbing in and setting off, they quickly encountered dangerous river conditions that caused the boat to capsize. The two men and their loot were thrown into the water.
One of the men drowned, but the other managed to reach the shore and fled into the forest. A few days later, cold and bug-bitten, he returned to Terrace and surrendered to the police. The sacks of money they had stolen were never found.
