Before the rain showers this week, we snuck out and seeded something that had nothing to do with the greenhouse and everything to do with family.

Our daughter Kaitlyn is getting married on the farm later this year. She helps out when she's not working her "big girl job", and somewhere along the way, it was decided that her wedding deserved a sunflower patch here at Maple Park Farm.

So we seeded her sunflower patch. Watching those seeds go into the ground, knowing where they are headed, was one of those quiet farm moments that's hard to put into words.

A few short months from now, if all goes well, those sunflowers will be at Kaitlyn's wedding. We will be sharing updates all summer as they grow. 🌻

The rain is finally clearing, at least for a day, and if you are like us, you are itching to get back out into the garden.

Before you do, here are a few things worth knowing after a stretch of heavy rain like this one:

☔ Stay off the soil. Wet soil compacts easily underfoot and makes life harder for your plant roots.
💧Check for standing water 24 hours after the rain stops. Some pooling is normal, water that won't drain after a full day needs attention.
🌱 Hold off on fertilizing for a few days. Nutrients wash through waterlogged soil before plants can use them.

We were right in the middle of transplanting our own garden starts when the rain rolled in, so we've been waiting for the same break you have. The moment the soil passes the squeeze test, we are back out there. Our full guide is on the blog this week. Link in bio.

Peppers don't get as much attention as tomatoes when it comes to companion planting, but they benefit just as much from the right plant neighbours.

Here is what we would plant alongside your peppers this season:

🌱 Chives - one of the most underrated companion plants in the garden. They repel aphids effectively, are incredibly low-maintenance, and they look beautiful as a border plant around pepper beds or tucked into containers. As a bonus, chives are perennial in many Alberta microclimates; plant them once, and they come back year after year.

🌿 Basil - yes, the same basil that loves your tomatoes is just as valuable alongside peppers. It repels aphids and spider mites, two of the most common pepper pests, and the basil + pepper combination in the kitchen speaks for itself.

🌼 Marigolds-plant them throughout any bed that contains peppers, and they will do the same work they do for tomatoes. Universal companions.

All three are on our benches. Come grab them this week.

If you picked up plants from us this week or you are planning to come by soon, here is what you need to know about the next couple of days.

Winds and cooler temperatures are moving through Thursday and Friday. That's completely normal for Alberta in May, and your transplants will be just fine as long as you follow a few simple steps:

🌡️ Keep them indoors in a bright spot. A sunny window or a warm room is perfect. Not the garage unless it's heated.
💧 Water lightly. Just enough to keep the soil from drying out completely. Don't overwater while they are waiting.
🚫 Don't plant into cold, wet soil. Roots struggle to establish when the ground is too cold. Patience now means healthier plants all summer.
☀️ Monday is looking better.

While you are waiting out the weather, it is a great time to browse our pepper guide on the blog. We just published a breakdown of two varieties we grew this season, California Wonder Bell and Hungarian Hot Wax, plus tips for getting peppers off to a strong start in Alberta.

Victoria Day weekend is the moment Alberta gardeners have been waiting for, and our tomato bench is fully loaded and ready for you.

A heads-up, though: a storm is expected over the next couple of days. Wind, rain, and cooler temperatures through Thursday and Friday. Our advice? Come pick up your tomatoes now while the selection is great, keep them in a warm spot indoors, and get them in the ground once conditions settle. Monday is looking much better.

If you are not sure which varieties are right for your space, we just published a quick guide on the blog, It walks through the types of tomatoes we grew this season.

Your plants will be just fine waiting a few extra days. Alberta gardeners are patient people. 🌱

Thank you for a wonderful Mother's Day weekend. We are so incredibly grateful for every single person who came out to the farm to celebrate with us.

When you support Maple Park Farm, you aren't just supporting a business. You are supporting this group of people.

We realized we haven't properly introduced everyone lately, so we wanted to take a moment to say hello!

🌿Lisa - A familiar face in our greenhouse for many years now. She juggles our transplanting with raising her little ones at home, and we are grateful she shares her time with us.

🌿Erika - Our incredible summer student and this year's class valedictorian, we are so incredibly proud of her!🎓 This is her first season with us, and she has already jumped into everything we have thrown her way. From transplanting to restocking the benches and whatever else needs to be done. She is a joy to have on the team.

🌿Sandy - If you have been coming to Maple Park Farm for a while, you absolutely know Sandy. She has been with us for 17 years and brings her bubbly personality to every single customer interaction.

🌿Marge - A wonderful addition to our team with many years of experience. She brings exceptional knowledge, an outstanding work ethic, and is always the first to roll up her sleeves and pitch in wherever she's needed.

🌿Kaitlyn - Our daughter, who has literally grown up in the greenhouse and knows every corner of it. In her "big girl job" she is a lab and x-ray technician, but whenever she can, she is right here with us. We love having her in the greenhouse.

🌿Kent - The backbone of this whole operation. He is the one making sure the fields are seeded, the harvest happens, the greenhouse is maintained, and that everything keeps moving forward, season after season.

🌿Ty - Our son, who operates heavy equipment by day and still shows up for the farm whenever he's needed. (missing from picture)

🌿Sam - Our future son-in-law is employed in the oilfield service industry and helps out on projects around the farm. (missing from picture)

From our family and team to yours, thank you for celebrating the weekend with us.

You want Mom's patio to look beautiful this summer. The last thing you want is to give a gift that struggles by July.

Here is what makes the difference: every plant on our benches has been trialled and tested specifically for Alberta's growing conditions. Vigour, colour, performance, if it doesn't thrive here, it never makes it to our greenhouse benches.

Which means when you bring one of our plants home, you can feel confident it is going to do what you are hoping for.

Two days left before Mother's Day. We are open, come in and let us help you find exactly the right fit for Mom's space.

🪴 Every mom who visits this weekend receives a free plant from us.
