We manage our bees in the most sustainable and holistic way possible. All of our honey is local, 100% pure and unpasteurized.

Fortunately the warm weather is holding on and I’ll be able to get the last of my honey extracted by early next week. The bees are looking strong going into fall.

It’s been a good summer for the bees but these large strong hive have the potential to become over run with varroa as the population declines into fall. So important to monitor and treat accordingly.

If there wasn’t enough going on with our honey bees, European Foul Brood ( EFB ) is making a come back after a decade or more decline. For those beekeepers that don’t know what to look for here is a photo of what it looks like. Thankfully not my hive. Also a link to the OMAFRA information just published. A surprise today when I lifted the lid. I put fondant on this hive a few weeks ago. It came through winter strong but was a little light. I was surprised to see at the drone comb built in the space so quickly. As I carefully removed the comb I seen what looked like a queen cup so I pulled a few frames. No way to be 100% certain they aren’t old cups from last season but the one on bottom looked fresh. If so it would definitely be the earliest queen cups I have seen here.

They have arrived. Dandelions are a beekeepers best friend in the spring. They represent the first significant source of nectar for the bees. There are a few early sources of pollen but the nectar really starts with the dandelion. 🐝
