Not only when we deliberately stop to teach them about where they come from.

I wasn't expecting this.

My daughter's best friend isn't Asian. But for her birthday, her fav gift has been Mei, our Chinese doll. Out of everything she could've chosen, she chose to honor a culture that isn't even her own family's.

Representation isn't just our kids seeing themselves. It's about raising kids who choose to see and celebrate each other, without anyone asking them to.

That's been the heart of this whole summer for us. Taking your culture on every adventure, and learning to celebrate each other's along the way. School starts again in a couple weeks and I know they'll be carrying that friendship into a whole new year. Proof that this friendship doesn't need an explanation.

Filipino families, you asked for him, and we really wanted to get him right. ❤️

We were almost completely finished when our marketing coordinator looked at him and said something still felt off.

It was his hair.

She comes from a Filipino family herself, and once she pointed it out, we could see exactly what she meant.

So we went back again.

We researched Filipino hairstyles, created completely new hair designs, asked for feedback, and reworked him until it finally felt right.

This is one of those parts of creating Joeydolls that people don’t always see. Sometimes we’re this close to finishing a doll and still decide to change something because the little details matter.

We don’t just want a child to recognize the cultural outfit. We want Filipino families to look at him and feel that familiar connection. ❤️

We’re so glad we took the extra time with him.

Now Bayani is almost here, and we cannot wait for Filipino children to take him on adventures, cuddle him at bedtime, and grow up with a little more representation woven into everyday play.

And for all the adults saying, “Where was this when I was little?”… this one is for you too. 🥹❤️

For a lot of us, that wasn’t normal growing up.
