Today marks the second observation of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We honour and remember the thousands of children who lost their lives due to the Residential school system, as well as their survivors, families and communities.
Learning and unlearning are key steps to meaningful reconciliation, and this month some of our most instrumental people and policy leaders had the privilege of attending a Blanket Exercise led by Fred Martin, an Indigenous Knowledge Consultant we entered a partnership with last year. We are committed to continue this journey of learning about and engaging with the history of Indigenous people in Canada, along with the hardships and injustices that they face today.
We are committed to elevating Indigenous voices and stories by growing the number of Indigenous authors that we carry, and feature in our stores and online. In addition to our own list of Indigenous authors and books, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has partnered with Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, and artist Jordan Stranger, to create a 50-book resource guide for students and educators, highlighting and exploring Indigenous voices in children and youth literature.

From the artist:
Knowledge has been proven to change perspectives small and large. Through the efforts of many people past and present, this resource has been made possible. With everything I have come to know about Indigenous cultures across Kanata, I felt it was only right to create an image of an Indigenous family, surrounded by love and their culture.
