An ingenious feat of paper engineering that features an interactive cover, 17 pop-ups plus multiple manual experiments in light and shape, Alphabet in Motion is an immersive volume explains—and demonstrates—the technologies and philosophies that have shaped letterforms through the ages. Kelli Andersen’s work puts the reader’s hands, eyes and minds in touch with the meanings behind the typography that surrounds us in our homes, on our screens and on our streets. If you look carefully, you can see the history of the world—from the Bronze Age to the Information Age—in the microcosm of type.

🎨 This Sunday - sharing an initiative from local artists!

The idea is to get as many artists as possible to gather at Ontario Place for an afternoon of plein-air painting to draw attention to the natural beauty of the site and what will be lost if the province moves ahead with its plans to fell over 1500 trees across the site. Many of these trees were planted over 50 years ago and support plant life, wildlife, and an abundance of bird species.

📍 Meeting spot on the West Island at Ontario Place

Please note access to the West Island via Trillium Park is closed. The entrance to the West Island is via the pedestrian bridge at the mainland Cinesphere entrance.

NEW AT SWIPE! KINFOLK issue 49

Join us in Scandinavia and get a deeper look inside the cultural powerhouse. In this issue, we examine Scandinavia through a different lens than most, looking beyond the quality-of-life tropes to interrogate the region’s darkness and the creativity it can breed. We speak to pop icon Tove Lo, provocative filmmaker Ruben Östlund, and Sweden’s preeminent painter Karin Mamma Andersson, among others. Plus essays on the mainstream, hotel art and how to make a decision.

Which images are made manifest across an artist’s practice and which are the ones that disappear? How do objects—whether seen or unseen—and the knowledge they possess traverse across place and time to avow their resistance? These are amongst the questions asked by artist Nour Bishouty in her artist’s book 1—130, a project that draws upon her ongoing research into the works of her father, Ghassan Bishouty (b. 1941 Palestine – d. 2004, Jordan). In 1—130, she borrows from methods of indexing and object classification to act as figurative codes for identification and cross-reference within the contexts of value and legacy. All the while employing paratactic strategies of text and image to understand the life and work of an artist faced with the discontinuity of deracination.

1—130 constitutes reflexive encounters with a series of 130 selected paintings and sculptures made circa 1965-2004 in Lebanon and Jordan, and concludes with an afterword by editor and curator Jacob Korczynski.- Art Metropole

Raawii Strøm Collection

Designed by Nicholas Wiig Hansen, the Raawii Strøm Collection is distinguished by Hansen’s signature focus on shape being informed by function. Drawing inspiration from still lifes by Danish modernist artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, this sculptural ceramic earthenwares —handmade in Portugal using a slip-cast technique— marries refined simplicity with everyday function, picking up on the colour palette and minimal yet mindful proportions of the simplified bowl, vessels and vases that characterize Lundstrøm's work. Available in palettes of vibrant orange, vaporous gray, and horizon blue.
