Many backyard birds are clever food hiders, or “cachers,” storing seeds, nuts and even insects in tree crevices, under bark or in the ground to eat later! 🌳🥜 These smart birds use landmarks, the sun and even each other to keep track of their stashes, helping them survive tough winters and busy seasons. ❄️☀️ Watching them work is like seeing a tiny treasure hunt happen in your backyard! 🔍✨

The windows in our homes and offices can be hazardous for birds. Birds cannot readily distinguish the presence of a pane of transparent glass from an unobstructed space or passageway and often fly into window panes causing injury or death. Click here to learn more: www.wbu.com/window-strikes

Fall Migration Bird Walk — Warblers, Songbirds & Photography Magic!

Join us for a Fall Migration Bird Walk through one of the park’s most active autumn hotspots. As warblers, kinglets, and other songbirds move south, the trees and thickets come alive with colour, movement, and sound — perfect for both birders and photographers.

Your walk will be led by expert birder - Peter Sproule, sharing real-time ID tips, migration insights, and behaviour cues to help you spot more birds and understand what you’re seeing. Expect mixed feeding flocks, bright fall plumage, and lots of opportunities to practice your skills.

And for those who want to level up their bird photography, retired professional photographer Max Skwarna will be part of the walk, offering friendly, hands‑on guidance throughout the morning. Max will help you work with soft fall light, choose clean and colourful backgrounds, and anticipate perches so you can capture well‑composed, beautifully lit images of the birds we find. Whether you’re shooting with a phone or a full camera setup, you’ll come away with photos you’re genuinely excited about.

Participation is limited to thirty (30) registered individuals. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars if available. Please note that the walk may venture beyond paved trails in some areas, and ground conditions could be wet or muddy. Suitable footwear is highly recommended.

Please Note: We will reply to your email to confirm your attendance for the walk or to notify you if the walk is fully booked. If your circumstances change and you are unable to attend, please inform us at your earliest convenience.

Your hike leader is local birder Peter Sproule

🍂Fall migration turns your backyard into a potential pit stop for birds on the move, and a few smart tweaks can make it irresistible! 🌿✨

🌻 Leave seed-producing plants standing to provide natural food sources.
🌳 Add a brush pile or two for shelter and protection.
🐦Create low-lying feeding areas where ground-feeding birds feel comfortable.
🧼Clean and repair feeders, and make sure they’re easy to refill during the winter months.
🔄 Keep food fresh and consistent—even in small amounts—so passing birds remember your yard as a reliable stop along their journey.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Day of Autumn is Tuesday, September 22. That's when the length of day and night are almost the same. Be sure your feeders are ready for some hungry birds that are either preparing or recharging for the longer nights.

The Blue Jay shown is an example of a North American bird working hard to find the additional calories needed to make it through autumn's longer hours of darkness. Which birds are visiting your backyard this season? Share in the comments.

Meet the Dark‑eyed Junco — Winter’s Little Carb‑Powered Charm!

Dark‑eyed Juncos are winter regulars across North America, and they’re powered by about 73% carbohydrates — mostly complex carbs that digest slowly and give them long‑lasting energy. Birds that rely on carbs often eat big meals, then rest for long stretches to digest… and juncos are pros at it.

They’re also wonderfully diverse! The Dark‑eyed Junco includes six distinct populations: Oregon, Pink‑sided, White‑winged, Slate‑colored, Gray‑headed, and Red‑backed. No matter which type visits your yard, they’re all winter favourites.

Project FeederWatch shows juncos appear at 80% of feeding areas across North America — more than any other bird. And here’s the best part: they tend to return to the same winter territory year after year. Chances are the juncos you’re seeing now are the same ones you welcomed last winter.

How to Feed Juncos Successfully
Juncos are natural ground feeders, just like cardinals. They want to face their food while they eat, so choose feeders that match their style:
- Hopper feeders
- Tray feeders — hanging or ground
- Tube feeders with U‑shaped rings
These setups let juncos perch comfortably and feed the way they prefer.

That little flash of charcoal and white hopping under your feeders is often the first sign that the season has turned.

Add a feeder this September and enjoy 15% off until the 21st. Welcome the colours, the movement, and the quiet joy of birds finding what they need right at your home.
