Created through a collaboration between Waard Ward, artist Nicolas Fleming, and photographer Darren Rigo, Flowers for Shoruk Alsakni 2 documents one of the collective’s community-created bouquets.
Presented within a structure built by Fleming from recycled materials and photographed by Rigo, the work transforms an ephemeral floral arrangement into an enduring record of gathering, collaboration, and care.
In 2022, Waard Ward planted historic Damask roses during a land-based residency at the University of Toronto Scarborough, creating a gathering place in memory of public gardens destroyed in Syria. The print was later included in the Doris McCarthy Gallery’s 2024 exhibition A rose gives its fragrance even to the hand that crushes it, which considered displacement, the lasting effects of war on land, and the ways communities cultivate familiarity and a sense of home.
