“Black History, Past and Present in Kensington Market” is a walking tour led by local business owner and drum educator Saikou Saho. Saho has been running his store — African Drums And Art Crafts in the market since 1998.

He has led countless djembe workshops and events in partnership with organizations such as Afrofest, the Toronto District School Board, VIBE Arts and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

This tour will end with a drumming workshop at African drums And Art Crafts.

Join photographer Ryan Rubin for an evening conversation about Augusta & Baldwin, his ongoing photographic project documenting Kensington Market.

Ryan will share the story behind the project, how photography became a creative outlet while living and working in the neighbourhood, and why seemingly ordinary moments often become the images that resonate most years later. The talk will explore photography as a way of preserving the atmosphere, character, and evolving identity of Kensington Market, creating a visual language that captures the people, places, and moments that make the neighbourhood so meaningful.

The artist talk includes time for questions, conversation, and a chance to experience the exhibition.

Free to attend. Everyone is welcome.

🎬 MONA IN THE MARKET 🎬

In 1982, local muralist Peter Matyas and his friends painted the Mona Lisa mural in Toronto’s Kensington Market, vowing one day to return to finish it in colour. Over 40 years later, the Kensington Market Community Land Trust (KMCLT) partnered with Peter to restore the mural on its building, preserving this community landmark and bringing new meaning to the artwork. Learn the story behind the restoration of one of Kensington Market’s most beloved murals.

Thank you to the City of Toronto (Economic Development & Culture Division) and Councillor Dianne Saxe (Ward 11, University-Rosedale) for providing funding support for the mural restoration.

We are thrilled to welcome Andrew Mookerjea and Rafael More-Kushner to the team this summer!

Rafael (he/him) will be working as our Executive Assistant this summer. He is a fourth-year Business Administration student at Bishop’s University, specializing in Human Resources. He has lived in Kensington Market his whole life and feels lucky to have grown up in a neighbourhood with such a strong sense of community, history, and character.

Andrew (he/him) will be working as our Summer Events Coordinator. He is a recent graduate from UofT where he studied English and Political Science. He has previously worked in event planning, political campaigning, communications and was (briefly!) a line cook. This summer he will be supporting KMCLT’s walking tours and summer programming.

Both our new hires can be found at our new Welcome Space at 88 Nassau St., drop by to say hi and welcome them to the KMCLT community!

KMCLT's research committee, supported by Dr. Farzaneh Hemmasi, Dr. Emily Hertzman and Scott McCallum, has put together a map of Kensington Market to help us understand the changes that have taken place, the changes that are coming, and imagine the future that we want together. Drop by our mapping project launch and see the work that's been done!
