Kensington in Common: Community Land for Community Life
Kensington Market Community Land Trust (KMCLT) is a community initiative created to protect the social and economic diversity of our neighbourhood. Kensington Market in under tremendous economic and development pressure. Renters are being pushed out of their homes. Food sellers are losing their stores. Diversity and affordability, the very s
oul of the market, are under threat. KMCLT is a grassroots organization led by Friends of Kensington Market (FOKM) to address this crisis. Through the community land trust model, KMCLT will work with residents, merchants, community groups, and lovers of Kensington Market to acquire land for the good of the entire community - for affordable housing, small business start-ups, and green space. We hope to continue Kensington Market's tradition of small store on the ground floor and affordable living quarters above. KMCLT will promote community participation in how land is used to keep Kensington Market eclectic, vibrant, and welcoming to all. Special thanks to Rafi Ghanaghounian, Keep 6 Contemporary Art and illustrator Shengyu Cai for the KMCLT artwork.
