We forgot it was Father’s Day when we opened up a few shrub delivery dates this June. 😅

Oops.

So here we are. Father’s Day. A van full of shrubs. 🚛🌿 And a long day of deliveries across Toronto.

One shrub in today’s deliveries caught our attention. Hydrangea paniculata Torch®. ✨

The flower heads are already there, tucked tightly into the tips of the stems, quietly preparing for what comes next.

And standing beside a van full of shrubs this morning, we found ourselves thinking about its name.

Torch®. 🔥

Not because today is about fathers alone.

For some people, the person who carried the torch was their father.

For others, it was a grandfather, an uncle, a coach, a teacher, a mentor, a neighbour, a friend, or a stepfather.

Sometimes they entered your life when you were five.

Sometimes they arrived when you were fifty.

The timing doesn’t matter.

The title doesn’t matter.

What matters is that they showed up. ❤️

They taught. They encouraged. They listened. They believed.

And somewhere along the way, they passed something on.

Patience.

Wisdom.

Confidence.

Resilience.

The torch. 🔥

We’ll spend most of today delivering shrubs, then head home for supper with our four kiddos. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Today, we’re grateful for the people who carried the torch for us, and the people carrying it for someone else.

🚨 Any lawyers in the group willing to barter legal services for perennials? 🌿⚖️😂

Asking for a friend.

👀🍿

Some of you may remember a post from a few weeks ago.

We were absolutely buried.

🚛 Toronto
🚛 Ottawa
🚛 Montreal

Plants everywhere.

Coffee doing absolutely nothing. ☕️

We were behind schedule.

One customer was upset because her delivery was delayed.

Fair enough.

Then we learned childcare had been arranged…

👶

…to plant fourteen perennials.

🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

Friends.

We should have trusted our instincts.

😂

So we cancelled the order.

Refunded the order.

Then, in our usual fashion, we bent over backwards.

Because that’s what we do.

We delivered the plants anyway.

For free. 🚛🌿

The refund had already gone through.

We simply suggested donating the money to CHEO. ❤️

Fast forward three weeks.

We follow up.

The response included:

📋 Legal records

📋 Consumer complaints

📋 Emotional labour

📋 Harassment allegations

📋 Future legal action

📋 An invoice for replying to emails

AN INVOICE.

😂😂😂

For a brief moment we forgot we sell flowers.

We thought we were being indicted.

Meanwhile we’re standing there wondering:

🤔 Who got the free plants?

🤔 Who got the refund?

🤔 How did fourteen perennials become a legal matter?

Which brings us to today’s feature…

🌿 Yarrow ‘Peter Cottontail’ 🌿

Unlike some things we’ve encountered this spring…

Peter Cottontail is low maintenance.

When Alain from Ottawa found out he was the winner of our June draw, we thought he’d take a victory lap.

Maybe put his feet up. Enjoy the moment.

Nope.

The next thing we knew, another perennial order landed in our inbox.

Honestly, that’s the kind of behaviour we can support. 🌿

Heading to Alain’s garden:

🌸 Salvia ‘Marcus’
Short. Tough. Covered in flowers. The garden equivalent of that person who’s 5’4” and somehow wins every argument.

🤍 Echinacea Kismet® White
Clean, bright, and elegant. Makes every neighbouring plant look like it got dressed in the dark.

💙 Perovskia ‘Crazy Blue’
Already flowering and not being subtle about it. This plant doesn’t enter a garden quietly. It kicks the door open and starts attracting pollinators.

✨ Eurybia ‘Eastern Star’
Quiet all season, then suddenly it’s autumn and this thing is out here acting like the main character.

🌼 Phlomis tuberosa
Tall spires, architectural flowers, and enough confidence to stand in the back of the border and still steal the show.

🌼 Phlomis russeliana
If a perennial could cross its arms and say, “Relax, I’ve got this,” it would be this one.

And yes, the battery-powered shears made it into the photo again. At this point they’re basically staff.

Congratulations, Alain. What a way to head into the weekend. 📦🌿

Things have finally started to normalize on the perennial front.

The spring rush has eased, we've almost caught up on sleep, and somewhere between coffee #1 and coffee #2 this morning, we thought:

"Maybe it's time to bring shrubs back." 🌳

You've been asking. A lot.

So shrub deliveries are officially live for Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.

📦 Limited delivery dates
📦 Limited inventory
📦 Delivered right to your door

We're starting small and seeing how much interest there is, so once a delivery date fills up, it's full.

Get your shrubs. 🌿

🌅 Went to bed before the sun went down.

🍻 Woke up before the last-call crowd had even found their Uber.

Years of Toronto deliveries will do that to you.

You learn to leave before the traffic, before the construction, and before a street you’ve driven for twenty years suddenly decides it has other plans.

Then FIFA showed up. ⚽️😳

Good luck, everybody.

Meanwhile, we’re over here admiring grass. 🌿

Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa macra).

No flowers. No drama.

Just pure garden swagger.

It spills over pathways, lights up shady corners, softens hard edges, and catches every breeze like it knows exactly how good it looks. ✨🌿

And if you’ve got a shady spot that’s feeling a little empty…

Well…

First it’s one grass.

Then a fern.

Then a hosta.

Then it’s delivery day and you’ve somehow ordered six more plants. 👀

Now you’re pacing by the front window waiting for the OG perennial delivery guy to roll up in the unmarked van with the good stuff. 🚐🌿📦

No questions.

No paperwork.

Just a quick exchange and suddenly your shade garden looks a whole lot better.

We don’t judge.

We just make the drop. 😎🌿

🐑🖤 Well, this is awkward…

We finished Toronto deliveries before dark.

We’re not sure what to do with ourselves either.

The van is loaded, the truck is rolling, and we’re taking a rip toward Ottawa. 🚐💨🚚

Meanwhile, here’s an extreme close-up of Baptisia ‘Honey Roasted’ looking absolutely fantastic.

Want the dream team?

🌾 Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’

💜 Salvia ‘Noche’

🤍 Echinacea ‘White Swan’

That’s not a plant list. That’s a garden plan.

📦 Ottawa! We’ve still got room on Monday’s delivery route. Order by 6 a.m. tomorrow and we’ll bring the plants.

📍 We’ve updated our delivery service areas… again.

Like any good garden, our delivery routes are always evolving. 🌿

We’ve recently fine-tuned our service area to focus on the Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal regions, plus many communities that fall naturally along those routes. The maps aren’t on the website just yet, but our postal code checker is fully updated.

Want to know if we deliver to you?

👀 Visit the website and enter your postal code in the “Do We Deliver?” pop-up. It’s the quickest and most accurate way to check.

If the pop-up doesn’t appear, try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache.

And if you’re just outside the service area and think we should take another look, send us an email. We’re still making adjustments and are happy to review locations that make sense along our existing routes.

🚚 Current delivery days:

🌿 Toronto & surrounding areas: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
🌿 Ottawa & surrounding areas: Monday, Friday
🌿 Montreal & surrounding areas: Wednesday

And for the first time in a very long time… we’re taking Sundays off. 😊

Now for the honest part…

As much as we’d love to deliver plants to every gardener in Ontario and Quebec, we simply can’t spend hours driving off-route for a handful of plants. A delivery truck may be mighty, but it’s not magical. 😅

We’re committed to hand-delivering healthy, Ontario-grown plants—not shipping boxes through third-party couriers. Less cardboard. Less plastic. Less stress for the plants. More happy roots. 🌱

We’re working hard to find the sweet spot between serving as many gardeners as possible and keeping deliveries efficient, sustainable, and reliable.

Questions? Send us an email or leave a comment below. We’d be happy to help. 💚

🌞 If your day is looking a little grey, let Gaillardia ‘SpinTop Orange Halo’ handle the colour correction. 🌞

Some flowers whisper. This one kicks the garden door open and yells, “GOOD MORNING, EVERYBODY!”

With fiery orange petals dipped in sunshine yellow, ‘SpinTop Orange Halo’ blooms for months, shrugs off the heat, and keeps pollinators buzzing from summer right into fall. 🌼🐝

Meanwhile, here at Black Sheep Perennials, we’re wrapping up GTA deliveries under blue skies while our Ottawa and Montreal friends are looking out the window wondering if they should start building a canoe. ☔🚣

This morning is dedicated to what we’re calling our “encore tour.” The plant we missed on your order? We’re coming back, baby. The forgotten flat? We’re on it. No plant gets left behind on our watch. Not today. Not ever. 🌿💪

Montreal, we’ll see you Wednesday when the rain settles down. Ottawa, we’re still on track for Monday. Thank you to everyone who’s been rolling with the weather and cheering us on from their gardens.

Until then, enjoy this little burst of sunshine. Some plants brighten a garden. This one looks like it pays taxes, has a gym membership, and still has energy left to bloom all summer. 😆

What’s blooming brightest in your garden this weekend? 🌿

🚐🌿 SATURDAY DELIVERY DAY 🌿🚐

This van is carrying 358 plants, 39 deliveries, and a driver whose confidence took a bit of a hit yesterday. 😂

The Ottawa run was going beautifully.

Everything was on schedule.

Everything was smooth.

Then somewhere east of Kingston, a tiny thought showed up:

“Hang on… wasn’t there a stop in Belleville?”

Now, here’s the problem.

Belleville wasn’t five minutes behind.

Belleville wasn’t twenty minutes behind.

Belleville, Napanee, and Kingston were all sitting comfortably in the rearview mirror. 😳

Friends…

An entire city got forgotten.

Not a customer.

Not a tray.

Not a box.

A whole-ass city. 🤣

So the van turned around and enjoyed a completely unplanned two-hour tour of Eastern Ontario.

Today, somehow, Black Sheep has been trusted with 358 plants all over again.

The van is packed to the roof.

There are TEN flats of Asarum europaeum hiding in the drawer system underneath.

And everyone’s feeling much more aware of where Belleville is.

If you see a Black Sheep van in Toronto today, give a wave. 👋

Five Sunny Seduction yarrows. 🌿

Customer sees them.

Customer looks at the yarrow.

Customer looks at us.

Customer looks back at the yarrow.

🤨

“That’s it?”

Every year. 😂

We explain the Chelsea Chop.

✂️ Stronger stems.

🌿 Bushier growth.

🌼 More flowers.

“Trust the process.”

Then…

Radio silence. 🦗

Because gardening is the only hobby where someone can take a perfectly healthy plant, cut part of it off, and confidently say:

“Don’t worry, it’ll be better.”

🤣

And yet…

A few weeks later, here we are.

Look at that fresh growth.

Look how they’ve filled out.

Not even flowering yet.

Not even close.

But if you’ve been gardening long enough, you know exactly what’s coming next. 🌼

So before you start side-eyeing that perennial you just received…

Trust the process.

The yarrow did.
