In store now! We Are Who We Are by Wab Kinew and illustrated by Janine Gibbons.

The follow up to Go Show the World, We Are Who We Are celebrates thirteen Indigenous heroes from history to the modern day.

From engineer Mary Golda Ross to interpreter George Bonga, from actor Chief Dan George to author Tasha Spillett, Kinew, with striking illustrations by Janine Gibbons, explores how each of these heroes embraced their most authentic self and encourages young readers to do the same.

We asked the internet why should people shop at Old's Cool?

“Shop at Old’s Cool because every dollar spent there helps keep community, creativity, conversation and local care alive in a city that desperately needs more of all four.”

People shop at Old’s Cool General Store because it feels like the opposite of a soulless transaction. It’s a place where you can buy a coffee, a birthday card, a frozen dumpling, a radical book, a handmade soap, and somehow also leave having had a real conversation with another human being.

A few reasons people keep coming back:

It’s deeply community-rooted. Old’s Cool hosts gatherings, supports neighbours, showcases local makers, and creates space for people to actually connect in person.

The products feel curated by humans, not algorithms — local foods, small-batch self-care, books, gifts, snacks, art, and weird delightful finds.

It supports independent artists, QTBIPOC creators, and hyper-local businesses instead of giant corporations.

The store has personality. It preserves the history of the neighbourhood while also feeling joyful, political, quirky, warm, and alive.

People genuinely feel cared for there. Reviews and community comments repeatedly describe it as welcoming, inclusive, and “a community hub,” not just a store.

Our Featured Poet Tonight: NARI

Our open mic is a space for truth, grief, despair, anger, humour, love, care, joy. Truths that don't get heard in the mainstream. Sorrows we live with, the suffering we endure daily and the persistence of hanging on to life with your finger nails.

It's a different kind of mic.... You don't have to be stitched up, we are ok if you unravel.

It's about emotional honesty. Together.

Come by if you dare experience some realness in a pretty fake world.

Spoken Word Artist Echo spoke fire about the Objectification of Black Femmes.

Another teaser for the open mic tonight.

You want the truth..... Can you handle it though??

This is way better than Netflix.

QT BIPOC Royalty Lezlie Lee Kam on Open Mic (teaser from last month's open mic!!)

When I came out in the early 1990's, Lezlie had already been out and organizing for years. As a self proclaimed "Jurassic D**e" she has been leading q***r organizing for over 5 DECADES. She is an elder, a sister a friend and as you can hear, a storyteller and holder of truths.

These are the kinds of stories that were spun last month...
What is in store for us tonight??????

Come by and see. You will be moved. You will learn and you will be part of a courageous community.

And Lezlie, we looooooooooooooooooooooooove you.

Asian Heritage Month shouldn't just be a performance of pride...... disconnected from reality.

To honour Asian communities means confronting the histories of displacement, colonialism, racism, labour exploitation, war, migration, caste violence, Islamophobia, anti-Blackness, and the ongoing systems that shape our lives today.

It means making space for the fullness of who we are — especially the voices often pushed to the margins: q***r and trans Asians, disabled Asians, working class Asians, undocumented people, refugees, artists, activists, and those refusing silence.

Our histories are not tidy. Our communities are not monoliths. But our stories matter.

This month, we celebrate not just heritage, but resistance, tenderness, survival, joy, and the possibility of solidarity across difference.

Happy Asian Heritage Month.

Mother's Day can be complicated....but supporting your local MOM and MOM shop is simple:)!

Mother’s Day can hold so many different feelings. I'm in it. It's so hard.

But for some, it’s joyful.

For some, it’s tender.

For some, it’s grief-fille.

For some, it's hopefuland healing.
.....or all of those things at once.

We've decided to think about the people who mother us in all the ways the different ways— mothers, grandmothers, chosen family, aunties, mentors, elders, friends, caregivers and the people who show up with love again and again.

If you’re looking for a meaningful gift, we’d be honoured if you chose to shop with us this Mother’s Day. We like to see ourselves as neighborhood aunties. So your every purchase supports an Aunty run independent space built with care, community and connection at its centre.

We hope all the people doing mothering feel cared for this weekend.

Whether it’s a tiny token, a beautiful book, something handmade, or simply time spent together, we hope this weekend brings softness where it’s needed most.

Take good care and your care matters.
