That high-pitched whistle from your hearing aid has a name: feedback.

It can happen for several reasons, including earwax, fit, a blocked component, or the way the hearing aid is programmed. The important part is figuring out why it is happening rather than simply turning the volume down.

Hearing aids shouldn’t just be turned up until everything sounds louder.

Why do we test each ear separately?

Because hearing loss doesn’t always affect both ears in the same way. A significant difference between the two ears - known as asymmetry - can be clinically important and may warrant further investigation.

That’s why a comprehensive hearing assessment looks at each ear individually, not just your overall hearing.

If one ear seems noticeably worse than the other, don’t ignore it.
