Martin Margiela’s appointment as creative director of Hermès came as a surprise when it was announced in the spring of 1997. When his debut collection was shown a year later, critics gave it lukewarm reviews, having expected an avant-garde revolution. Instead, Margiela produced a simple, luxurious, yet discreet and chic wardrobe intended for everyday dressing.

The “Vareuse” is a signature of these collections, with a deep V-neckline that drops down to the waist, said to be inspired by French sailors’ smocks. This detail appears in variations across shirting, knitwear, and outerwear throughout Margiela’s time at the house. The example in VSP’s Archive is a tunic vest cut from shearling teddy lambskin.

Among his other original designs are the Double Tour looping strap of the Cape Cod watch and the losange, a diamond-shaped scarf that is now one of Hermès’ bestsellers.

In 2017, MoMu in Antwerp presented the exhibition “Margiela, The Hermès Years”, accompanied by a book that underscored the quiet significance of his tenure. The passage of time has demonstrated the undeniable influence of Margiela’s design work for Hermès, which can still be felt today in the work of The Row, Phoebe Philo, and others.
