Challenging the Darkness is a painting that captures the powerful and courageous journey of Shaheed Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra—a man who set out to bring light into the darkness that had engulfed the Sikh community in 1995. He risked his life to uncover and share the truth about thousands of innocent Sikhs who were unlawfully killed by the Indian government. His mission was clear: to expose these injustices on a global scale.
During his visit to Canada, Bhai Khalra spoke out boldly against the Indian government’s actions. He presented evidence from his investigation—records that included the identities of Sikh men between the ages of 15 and 35 who had been killed and buried in secret. Among them were also the bodies of elderly Sikhs and Sikh women, all victims of a state-sanctioned tragedy.
Listening to his words filled me with overwhelming grief. As a Sikh, the pain of our community’s suffering is something I carry always, but hearing him speak uncovered even deeper layers of sorrow. As an artist, I’ve tried to channel my emotions and understanding of Bhai Khalra’s unshakable commitment and compassion into this piece. The ocean of tears he stands in represents the collective grief of the families who lost their loved ones and were left with no answers—only silence.
Despite being threatened by government officials, Bhai Khalra continued his search for truth. He knew the risks but chose to stand firm, knowing that the light he carried was more powerful than the darkness he faced. In the painting, he holds a candle and gazes at photographs of the missing—a visual representation of his words:
“Far away, in some hut, one little lamp lifted its head. It proclaimed, ‘I challenge the darkness. If nothing else, then at least around myself, I will not let it settle. Around myself, I will establish light.’”
As an artist, my work comes from a place deep within—every piece I create holds meaning and intention. Through painting, I form a connection with my subject that allows me to understand it on a deeper, more spiritual level. This painting took me back in time, allowing me to reflect on Bhai Khalra’s voice, his courage, and the fire of truth
