Did you know? Blue Mountain Pottery was founded in 1953 by three Czech immigrants in Collingwood, Ontario as a side hustle to keep a small ski hill afloat during the off season.

Known for its flow-green, drip glaze technique, it became immensely popular and was eventually sold off and expanded over the decades. The company closed its doors in 2004, unable to keep up with the cheaper ceramics being imported from China on a mass scale.

Today, their legacy lives on. The Blue Mountain ski hill was developed into a major ski resort and is open all year round. Blue Mountain Pottery has become highly collectible, especially the rarer colours like harvest gold, cobalt blue, red, mocha and slate, which were produced on a smaller scale.

You can still find pieces in thrift stores and various online marketplaces, and small collections in vintage stores like The Rusty Bird. The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto holds the largest collection that we know of, and seeing it has been added to our bucket list!

This tiny teapot and matching plate is painted with a raised, textured dragon design. It’s reminiscent of ceramics made in Occupied Japan but these pieces do not have any markings. There was probably a little teacup included with this set, but the two pieces we have are in excellent condition.
