World Class Jazz Comes to Campbellford
Canadian jazz pianist and composer Steve Holt will bring a slate of world class jazz performers to D’s Modern Caribbean Restaurant beginning Saturday June 3rd.
The lineup will feature duet performances with Holt on piano and Duncan Hopkins on bass June 3, Dave Young on bass June 10, vocalist Jana Reid June 17, Doug Watson on tenor saxophone June 24, and Perry White on tenor saxophone July 1st .
D’s Modern Caribbean Restaurant is situated in the picturesque town of Campbellford, about 50 km east of Peterborough, at 27 Front Street N, Campbellford, ON.
Seating for these shows is very limited. Seatings at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. $65 per person includes dinner and show with 3 course meal provided. Reservations required. Call (705) 400-7271 to book.
Steve Holt is a JUNO nominated jazz pianist and one of Canada’s top jazz musicians. In 1981 he received McGill University’s first-ever Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz performance. During this period that Steve travelled regularly to New York to study piano with world-renowned pianist Kenny Barron. In 1983 he released his debut album which was nominated for a JUNO. Since that time, Steve has built an international reputation having performed with, among others, Archie Shepp, Larry Coryell, Eddie Henderson, James Moody, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Bob Mover, and Michel Urbaniak. In 2014 Steve moved to Warkworth where he now lives. He currently has 6 CD albums and 3 singles to his credit.
Duncan Hopkins is a double bassist, composer and arranger who has been working at the highest levels of jazz for almost thirty years. Duncan was a member of Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass and the highly distinguished Canadian Jazz Quartet for ten years. He has toured extensively throughout Canada, Great Britain, Europe, Brazil and the United States. Duncan can be heard on over fifty albums, numerous CBC, BBC and NPR recordings. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England. Duncan has worked with such luminaries as Rob McConnell, Scott Hamilton, Peter Appleyard, Ed Bickert, Dianna Krall, Sheila Jordan, Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Watson, and Sam Rivers to name but a few.
Dave Young is a double bassist and one of Canada’s most beloved musical exports. The list of musicians with whom Dave has shared the stage is a virtual “Who’s Who” of international jazz, including Oscar Peterson (with whom Dave had a thirty-five year musical relationship), Clark Terry, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Zoot Simms, Joe Williams, Oliver Jones, Kenny Burrell, Cedar Walton, Hank Jones, Nat Adderly, Peter Appleyard, Gary Burton, Barney Kessell, Ed Bickert, Ranee Lee, Marcus Belgrave, Don Thompson, Kenny Burrell and James Moody. Whether he’s performing as part of a classical symphony, or as an integral member of an iconic jazz trio, or leading any of his dynamic ensembles, Dave remains a total musician and we are thrilled to have him join us in Campbellford.
Jana Reid is a local legend who has been singing, composing and performing for over 40 years in a wide range of genres including pop, country, blues, folk and jazz. You may have seen her in any number of events at Westben, and Jana has also acted in a variety of theatre productions in Toronto and locally at the Brighton Barn Theatre in years past. She is a seasoned performer with a big distinctive voice, reminiscent of vocalists like Anita O’Day and Sarah Vaughn.
Doug Watson is a tenor saxophone player, perhaps most known for his recording and performances with guitar legend Ed Bickert. Since the 1980’s, Doug has been active on the Toronto jazz scene having performed in the major clubs and festivals, leading his Trios and Quartets, and performing with Ed Bickert Quartet (steady 1989 – 1991), Jim Galloway All-Stars, Guido Basso, Mike Downes, Don Thompson Trio, Ron Collier and many others. His sound and passion are unmatched and we are excited to have him join us in Campbellford. Doug is also known for his years at Jazz FM in Toronto, where he brought great music and interviews to listeners everywhere.
Perry White is one of Canada’s top saxophonists. His expressive tone and lyrical approach to playing the entire family of saxophones have kept him busy performing in Canada and around the world for over four decades. His sound is steeped in the tradition of jazz and charged with the energy and experimentation of modern music. Moving to from Vancouver to Toronto in the 1980s, Perry has had the opportunity to perform and record with a wide spectrum of artists including The Count Basie Orchestra, Aretha Franklin, The Boss Brass, Dave Young, The Shuffle Demons, Holly Cole, David Foster, John Macleod Big Band, The Oscar Peterson Festival Big Band, The Esprit Orchestra, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and many others.
