FLOWOOD, Miss. - The Texas Southern Men's Golf team fought through the final round and posted an 871 (289 – 290 - 282) to finish second place at the inaugural TheeiLove Men's Collegiate, hosted by Jackson State University.

Affectionately nicked The Law Man 🤠

When I met Lawson Heffernan for the first time our conversation was extremely streamlined, it was about how we were going to make his dream to play NCAA Golf NCAA Div I golf come to fruition.

Everyone had their jobs, support tactics and responsibilities as these privileges don’t come easy but inevitably Lawson Heffernan had to work his tail off and get better, show his improvements through tournament scores, travel a ton, practice even more and stay positive through the entire recruiting process as there were many decisions that had to be made, on and off the course. This was 100% on Lawson!

He had to show his guns weren’t just smoke! He had to build his weapon arsenal in order to have all the shots needed to play golf at the next level. I’m extremely proud to say The Law Man has all the bullets to hit any shot.

He has worked for this, he deserves this and vows to continue improving his skill set and overall game in order to help Texas Southern University Golf rise up the rankings.

To coach Willie shankle Sylvia Masango thank you in advance for taking a shot on a Shooter from small town Ontario, Canada! I promise his game is anything but small! 🤜🏽🤛🏿

I had the pleasure to meet about a decade ago!

Early in our friendship it was clear, Russ was a special type of presence. Thoughtful, respectful, coachable, appreciative, considerate, reserved and calculated in almost everything his did and said.

Fast forward to today, now a budding young man and one who has only added positive character traits.

Have you ever heard that phrase, “he’s a fantastic player and even a better person”? Of course you have and it rings loud and so very true with Russ.

Russ chooses his words wisely and speaks rarely but when he does people tend to listen as something witty and meaningful always spills out!

Speaking of doing the talking, Russ lets his clubs do most of it and this week in Rockville, Maryland in the Adaptive Open held at what is one of my new favourite places …

Russ’ fired rounds of 78-75 that fell short of the stringent T20 & Ties Cut but we were both encourage with the steady growth his game is taking on.

Big crooked numbers were kept off the card, mistakes were limited & mitigated by strategy & game planning but in the end we were a few putts shy of playing the final round.

While Russ always wants to contend in each tournament he plays, this was always a recon mission in the end. It was an opportunity to look for exposure, learn how to prepare, compile a strategic game plan to navigate the landscape, get more comfortable in the arena and mature even more as a golfer and as a competitor.

Russ has youth on his side, Russ has the love of the game on his side and he has the best team, support and a level of determination that is unmatched. So now it’s back to the blister box to continue building and rounding is overall game and then his inevitable ascent up the rankings in years to come.

The level of play in the Men’s & Ladies Adaptive game has impressed again, it’s in a better spot than last year and the year before so it’s Russ’ job to close the gap through hard work. Russ has the ingredients, we have the recipe, I can’t wait to see what he cooks up next!

After a couple days of reflecting and after returning home from the Adaptive Open hosted by I couldn’t be more grateful.

Having the chance to hang beside while we navigated an amazing and challenging layout while competing against the best in the World was a memory I’ll never let go.

This experience solidified not just how talented these phenomenal athletes are, but also how true their character is and how relentlessly resilient their work ethic is and has to be both on and off the golf course.

Life brings different challenges to every human on earth and in my opinion and it’s what you do with that privilege that matters in the end. I was surrounded by hundreds of the most patient, kind, generous, determined, compassionate and supportive people this past week and it truly left me a better coach, a better partner, a better human.

Thank you for the opportunity

… but for now, I’m going to continue genuinely appreciate the one I’m living now with growing perspective.
