A strong geomagnetic storm is expected to light up the northern skies tonight, September 16, over Metro Vancouver and much of Canada. ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ have both issued a ๐๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ ๐๐๐ญ๐๐ก, in effect until Tuesday, September 17 at 12 p.m. The storm follows a ๐๐จ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐ฆ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (CME) from the Sun on September 14, which is predicted to disturb Earthโs geomagnetic conditions and create vivid auroral displays.
An aurora is a stunning natural light show caused by the interaction between the Sunโs charged particles and Earthโs magnetic field. In the ๐ง๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ง ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ซ๐, itโs called the ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ (northern lights), while in the ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ง ๐ก๐๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ก๐๐ซ๐, itโs known as the ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ (southern lights). You can even see auroras from space! To learn more about how these breathtaking displays happen, check out this NASA Space Place video.

๐ In Metro Vancouver, head to low-light areas like ๐๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐๐๐ง๐ค๐ฌ, ๐๐จ๐๐๐ซ๐ง๐จ, ๐๐ญ๐๐ง๐ฅ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ซ๐ค, or ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ง๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ฎ๐ง๐ญ๐๐ข๐ง for the best view. Residents in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg may see the northern lights overhead, while those further south, including southern Ontario and Quebec, may catch them near the horizon.

๐ค๏ธ The weather looks promising with just โa few cloudsโ forecasted tonight by Environment Canada, so the odds of a clear view are in our favour! On Tuesday, the weather may worsen, with increasing cloud cover and a chance of showers.

๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ Use a location with minimal light pollution.
๐ Tonightโs moon is almost full (97.9%), which may reduce visibility, but the stormโs strength could still create a vibrant display.
๐ธ Bring a camera with long-exposure settings to capture the auroras.
Donโt miss this rare opportunity to witness one of natureโs most beautiful shows!
