I’ve been working on this guide for what feels like forever. So excited to finally share it with you. 💛🌾✨

This October, Vancouver’s first Korean Book Festival brings together books, graphic novels, film, art, poetry, and performance to celebrate the newly designated Korean Heritage Month in BC!

Throughout the festival I hope you will feel the 정 (jeong: deep warmth and affection): A quality embedded in the Korean soul despite war and colonization, division and migration.

This October you will find stories shaped by history and memory, by extraordinary resilience, courage, tenderness, and imagination. Stories of independence activists raising a child while escaping Japanese attacks across wartime China. Of Jeju haenyeo who resisted colonial exploitation. Of battlegrounds shared between Korea and Canada. Of grief transformed through friendship. Of q***r life, love, and loneliness in a big city. They are specific and yet universal: The quest to find one’s place.

I travelled to Seoul last month to meet publishers and bring all festival titles back to Vancouver. Seeing them now on our shelves on Granville Island—preparing to meet the artists, writers, scholars, and performers who will bring these stories to life—feels deeply exciting and incredibly special.

I put this guide together because there is so much happening across several venues, and all festival events are free. Il faut profiter! Please come see the exhibition, Jari. Watch a film. Join us for book club. Meet all the artists. Take home free gifts. And sing-along with a real life haenyo-poetess. It’s a truly magical roster of events sprinkled throughout the city.

I’m in awe of the many hands at Korean Consulate General in Vancouver 주밴쿠버대한민국총영사관 for spearheading the programming, and so happy that Granville Island is a venue sponsor for this culturally meaningful celebration.

Our October book club—in conjunction with the Korean Book Festival and UBC’s Department of Asian studies—will offer 3 opportunites to engage with “Love in the Big City.” Longlisted for the Booker Prize, this novel distills the unique energy of Seoul, youth, and love, in a way that’s resonated with readers around the world.

On Friday October 9th, join us for an English language session in the evening at Nooroongji. Whether you’re a seasoned Nooroongji Book Club member, or coming for the first time, this will be an approachable, intimate evening held inside the bookstore afterhours.

Catch a FREE screening of the film adaptation at the Revue stage beforehand on October 9th, to deepen your immersion. All screenings include a free 15 minute mini-lesson in the Korean language.

The following week, October 16th, we’re excited to welcome Sang-young Park to Nooroongji Books for a special author edition of the book club. This will be a larger, festive event, offering a unique opportunity to engage directly with the author and celebrate his journey with a reception of light Korean fare.

What a start to Korean Heritage Month and Nooroongji’s Korean Book Festival program!! Thank you Christine Kim cmb9770 Vinh Nguyen for an electric evening. We were all enthralled, moved, and enriched by your presence. Thank you 🙏

Thank you too, to all the amazing guests who came out as the first October chill set-in in the air. And for asking such dialled in and engaged questions. So very cool to meet Jin-me Yoon and David Khang, artists I’ve been following for a long time.

So proud of our Nooroongji crew: Angela, Drina, Kendra, and Letitia, for pulling through setup and management of this event with such care and aplomb. Thank you angels 💛

Please join us for a double book launch! Dr. Crystal Mun-hye Baik (University of California, Riverside) and Dr. Christine Kim (University of British Columbia) will be in conversation about their recent book publications and shared interests in how we write Korean diasporas and imagine genealogies impacted by war, militarism and imperialism. This conversation will be moderated by Dr. Vinh Nguyen (McMaster University). Light refreshments will be provided.

What a nice August we had! We loved chatting books with you and holding your babies’ paws. How are we 7 whole days into September already?! The leaves are crispening, and school’s about to start. A peaceful and exciting time.
