78 years old. Still up at 4AM. Still at work by 7. Still seeing patients, publishing, writing books and trying new things.

Dr. Jean on what 78 feels like, and why she has no plans of slowing down.

This was the moment the penny dropped. 💡

While treating a patient for blepharospasm, Dr. Jean Carruthers heard something she wasn’t expecting: after treatment, her patient loved the “untroubled expression” it gave her.

Jean immediately thought of her husband, dermatologist Dr. Alastair Carruthers.

That night, she told him what she’d observed over dinner. His response? “Let’s do it.”

The very next day, they began their research into the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin.

Part 3: finding someone willing to be first.

Before Botox became one of the world’s most recognized cosmetic treatments, it was being used for something entirely different.

In 1987, Dr. Jean Carruthers was treating patients with blepharospasm when one patient became unexpectedly angry with her.

What happened next would change the course of cosmetic medicine.

This is The Botox Story. Part 1.

39 years ago this month, an unexpected “aha” moment changed the course of cosmetic medicine.

In September 1987, Dr. Jean Carruthers made the observation that would lead her and her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, to pioneer the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin.

Nearly four decades later, we’re going back to where it all began, and Dr. Jean is telling the story in her own words.

Follow along for The Botox Story.

Day 3 is too soon to judge your Botox result.

Botox typically starts working within 3–7 days and can take up to 2 weeks to fully settle. That’s why I schedule my patient follow-ups at the two-week mark, when we can properly assess the result and make any minor adjustments if needed.

After decades of treating patients with Botox, patience is still some of my best advice. 💉

After more than 30 years of treating patients with cosmetic Botox, these are the questions I still get asked almost every day.

Have a Botox question you’ve always wanted to ask? Leave it below.

Think you know sunscreen? ☀️ Let’s fact-check some of the most common myths I hear as a cosmetic doctor.

And yes, you need it on cloudy days, your makeup with SPF doesn’t count, and a tan is never a sign of healthy skin.

How many of these did you know?

Early in my career, I was often the only woman in the room. At Cosmetic Dermatology Society India (CDSI) in Mumbai, nearly half of the 1,200 physicians and surgeons in attendance were women.

What a wonderful change to see, and an exciting glimpse at the future of our field. ❤️

I talk about sunscreen a lot, so what am I actually wearing?

Lately, it’s Epicutis Lipid Shield. UVA, UVB + blue light protection, without the white cast. And yes, it’s sweat stable too. ☀️

Here’s why I’ve been recommending it to my patients.

Not all sunscreens are created equal, and the data is fascinating.

Here’s what we found after analyzing over 7,000 skin elasticity scans.
