Ah, phew, that’s done! On the eighth day of September! Thank you, beauties, both the ‘regulars’ who have always been so wonderfully supportive, and the lovely new people we’ve met in the last week.
Now, the count resets. We’re at zero out of 600 for September. That’s 27.22 books per day, to be exact. Like dishes that must be done every day, or meals cooking. EXCEPT it’s more fun, because we get to do it all with you. And you get to read!
See you in the morning.

Yes, we are open today for your Labour Day browsing! We’re still working on our August sales target with 53 books to go, so we would love it if you come see what we’ve got.

This evening at 5:30 we invite LGBTQ+ readers to our super-low-pressure Q/T book group, held every first Monday. How low is the pressure, you ask? You don’t have to read a specific book, or finish the book you’re reading. Just be q***r, read any or all of a q***r book, and chat about it with other q***r readers! See you then?

UPDATE: We did the thing! CItyNews at 6, and we'll see how it edits up.

So…I guess a news stringer will be here at 1:30. Any of our friends and fans want to come hang out and give a bit of moral support? It will be on camera so check your gut on that. (I’m going to say mask-optional for this one because it’s casual and short notice and I won’t be able to, so again, consider what’s best for you.)

It’s a Monday afternoon south of Broadway on Commercial Drive COMMERCIAL DRIVE VANCOUVER ‘THE DRIVE’. Earlier today a correspondent mentioned that people they know either don’t know where we’re located or have avoided the area due to construction. The few folks who are about chose the other side of the street, perhaps to avoid the sun. But we’re here, between 12th and 13th, next to Gojo Cafe and opposite Merci Boulangerie.

Really, 250 books? Can we do it? I just don’t know.

I found this little horsetail trying to root in the asphalt behind the bookstore. It made me think about tenacious things that try to hold on in difficult places. I also found a bookstore, , that is very open with their people about what it takes for them to stay open. So I’m following their lead:

We need to sell 600 average new books per month, or their equivalent in used books and merch. So far in August, we’ve sold 352. That’s a huge gap.

We aren’t seeing much new foot traffic since the end of construction. Maybe it’s yet to come, but it hasn’t materialized. The new buildings around us have not fully sold or rented out. This location is not sustaining us. People come to events, and y’all have been amazing in emergencies, but the event ends or the emergency is weathered and then we slide back into the same rut.

And the more we shrink, the more we…shrink. Our orders take longer than they should to arrive, partly because we are ordering so few books that it takes longer for us to meet supplier freight minimums. We are often importing by to order, rather than maintaining stock of US publications; that adds delays. It’s a downward spiral dragging at us. And still the rent goes up every July.

I’ve been looking at alternate locations and not making much headway; less rent seems to equal even less foot traffic, even in smaller spaces. And I have strong views on abandoning people I care about, and who care about this place. So my job is to try to keep this little plant growing where it’s rooted.

Right now, that means we must sell 250 books in 48 hours to head off the next emergency. There are thousands of you, and thousands more of your friends, and some of you at least must need a book or two. Yalla! See you soon!

Used books du jour: Three volumes of Berserk, the deluxe editions with the shiny red foil—two of them still in their shrinkwrap. If you’ve been hankering to build your set, this is a pretty sweet deal.

Still no lines! Great books and chill browsing pretty much all the time.
