Here's the why:
1) Keeping your fabric aligned with the corresponding section can be tricky, especially when you're starting out. To minimize frustration cut your fabric pieces extra big, as your confidence grows you can cut your pieces smaller so less fabric is wasted in off cuts.
2) Figuring out how to place your fabric so that the right side is up can be frustrating when you're learning FPP. You can remove that step by using fabrics that don't have a "right side" so that it doesn't matter which side ends up upright.
3) Setting the stitch length to a 1.0 - 1.4 has a few purposes. The smaller the stitch length the easier it is to be precise in where you start & finish a line of stitching which is helpful in FPP because we sometimes work with tiny lines that are very close together, and when you're tearing the paper off at the end having a smaller stitch length makes the stitches tighter so they hold together better as the paper is removed.
4) In FPP the fabric is placed on the blank side of the paper so folding it makes it easier to visualize where to place your fabric, and the fold marks make it easier to tear the paper off after sewing.
5) Tape will melt as your ironing so please please use glue to connect the paper pattern pieces.
