Excited for this opportunity to speak more on my journey and why books (especially multilingual books) matter now more than ever. Hope you can join us!
Posted • Booklovers rejoice! 📖 You're in for a treat this week. 😊

Our guest for Friday's show is Jennifer Kim, the owner and operator of two bookstores on Granville Island in Vancouver, Canada. Her store, Humpty Dumpty Books, has been serving children's booklovers for over 25 years. Nooroongji Books launched this past summer bringing a unique multilingual curation experience to an increasingly diverse region. Specializing in language, art, philosophy, home, and beautiful children's books from all over the world, core values that guide her selection are multilingualism, and diversity in representation and thought.

Some book suggestions for a wonderful mom of twin toddlers interested in meaningful representation, beautiful art, and good storytelling. Ended up being a 12 minute video😅 with no way to send so thought I’d post it here in case it’s helpful to others with similar interests. Maybe part 1 of many because there are so many more books in this vein I’d love to share! Let me know in the comments if this format is interesting and works for you. (If I’m running really behind getting back to you for book suggestions—please forgive me—I will get back to you by the end of the week!!)

It was fun being a part of this small interview with yesterday. Thanks so much for reaching out to small businesses Ben and Gary! ( & ) It was lovely to meet you both. Much respect & appreciation for the work you do covering local and other important beats.

And it’s true! We have had our winter holiday books out since the beginning of October simply due to overwhelming demand. This gave me an inkling to the season ahead and I’ve tried to over-order accordingly, so we are well stocked for now, but we are selling faster than we are receiving. I’m continuing to make orders and shipments are trickling through daily, but if you have specific titles in mind, I’d recommend picking them up sooner than later before they’re gone.

We do still have a couple of massive orders due to arrive soon….. (ahem… where are you!?!?) hopefully all in time before end of this year.

Heading back into my order now. Thanks and see you again soon amidst beautiful books 📚📖🎉🎁

Hello ! It’s been a moment. How have you been? We are doing alright—all of us are in decent health and good spirits. But it is so cold now! Hope you are keeping warm and cozy during these shorter days.

Obviously we have been coping with the weather, news, and covid by ordering, sniffing, and hugging a staggering amount of beautiful books. Books like the “I Wonder Bookstore” by ! Man… can we relate to this book any harder? If you love bookstores, or have ever worked in one, this book will warm your heart and moisten your eyes.

Speaking of which… We said goodbye to some beloved staff members recently, which was sad. But then we welcomed some wonderful new to our team, which was good! We are in need of one or two more though still, to help through the holiday season and beyond. Please share with any booklovers you know who might be interested!

Dear Book Friends, how have you been? It's somehow July already and there is so much happening in the world to unpack. "Thankfully, our numbers were not tattooed on our skin."

Heartbreaking, heart-searing sentence... from “They Called Me Number One: Secrets and Survival at an Indian Residential School”, by Xat’sūll chief Bev Sellers:

"Another thing that happened soon after we arrived at residential school is that we were given a number that would become our identity throughout our years at school. I became Number 1 on the girls' side. Although the other kids all continued to call me by name, ‘Bev Sellers’ ceased to exist for most of the nuns and priests. Instead they would say, ‘Number 1, come here’ or ‘I want these girls in my office, Numbers 3, 14, 72, 105’ or ‘Number 1, say the second decade of the rosary.’ Ninety or more years after she left St. Joseph's Mission, my grandmother still remembered her number—27—and—28—the number assigned to her sister Annie. My mom remembers her number was 71. Thankfully, our numbers were not tattooed on our skin."
