After using the Altec/Western Electric 32A horn and Coral M100 driver combination for the last year and a half, I decided to switch things up a bit. So yesterday I picked up this beautiful pair of TOA HFD 353 and HRH 651 drivers and horns which had been languishing online for months. They are really impressive and when paired with the 500Hz Heathkit crossovers and Altec 417-8B woofers are pretty much a perfect match. The seller said they sound quite similar to TAD which I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing but their sound signature is very pleasant. Different from Altec and JBL but not in between the two. Just different but in a good way. Now to find another project for the 32As but who am I kidding, right? I’ve already got one in mind.

Like the proverbial Phoenix rising from the ashes, The Turntable Shop is returning to North Vancouver, 3 years after Nick‘s passing. Headed up by former techs Connor and Julian, it should be another welcome addition to the Vancouver vintage audio scene. Opening off Lonsdale in early October.

Spent the long weekend sorting through bins of old photos and memories. Purging and letting go of the old to make room for the new. Held on to a couple special items as did my wife including this immaculate Sony Sports Walkman. Not sure if there was a single 80’s kid or Gen Xr who doesn’t recognize those ubiquitous yellow earphones, much like the white corded earbuds that followed them decades later. Now to dig up some tapes!

Just had a great visit and speaker building session with . Got to have a second listen to his forthcoming 10” coaxial, the L 10. Straight up ridiculous amounts of bass coming from these things. Hard to believe it’s a 10 inch driver. Keep your 👀peeled for these bad boys coming soon to a listening session near you.

Have really been enjoying the little Decware again lately. With the right high efficiency speakers I’m not sure you’d need much more. It’s modest 2.5 watts really capture all the right audiophile buzzwords. And it’s only like a 3 year wait to get one. Bonus.

Finally delivered these to their new owner and my friend yesterday after starting in on them late last spring. Have had them at home for the last couple weeks and kind of fell in love with them. Tried them with multiple sources and amplifiers including Denon, Decware, Advance Paris and Transaudio (Dartzeel clone) and they all sounded great. Very lively and dynamic speakers that are simultaneously laid back or ready to rock as needed. My next project is still tbd but this was another great learning experience that really helped to fuel my speaker building fire. Thanks as always to .hifi for the continued help and support along the way. Onward!

Here’s another teaser of the almost finished JN24.1. After just enough time off from the day job and a furious last minute push, these beauties are almost ready to rock.

This build has presented some interesting challenges along the way but I’m really happy with how they’ve turned out. More importantly, every challenge has led to an improvement in design and a stronger end result. And perhaps most importantly, it’s led to some exciting new ideas which I’m looking forward to exploring in the new year.
