Mark Pawson (1964–2025) was a British artist known for his prolific output of handmade ephemera, artist's books, zines, badges, and prints. A self-described "image ju**ie" and "photocopier fetishist," Mark was a central figure in the UK’s DIY art scene and mail art movement since the 1980s, celebrated for his innovative use of low-tech printing methods and his commitment to accessible, affordable art. He had long been active in the zine and art book fairs, including the very first Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair (2008) and London’s Artist/Publisher Fair. Mark passed away unexpectedly in March 2025 and has been deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
“Book Shops Not Bombs” was created at least twenty years ago or more. It was available as an open edition. According to the statement from the East London's Nelly Duff Gallery about this work, Mark believes that “we all have the responsibility to educate ourselves, and make a positive contribution to society. Everyday let’s support and remind each other of the power we have as individuals to make the changes we need.”
