Dear Ms. Sharma et al:

I write to you today to plead with you and the BC NDP to increase the fines and subsequent jail sentences for vehicular manslaughter.

As you may know today we heard the news that a dump truck driver was fined a mere $1100 and had restrictions on his licence for 12 months for the killing of a cyclist.

The subsequent lack of severe penalty for the person responsible for the death of Agustin Beltran is ludicrous and reprehensible in the 21st Centrury.

In a time of severe climate change where we are encouraging people to ride bikes [note the 2023 E-Bike program] more often on city streets that are becoming more and more dangerous.

I have cycled the city streets of the lower mainland for over 40 years and I am continually shocked at the low penalties for inattentive drivers that kill and injure cyclists and pedestrians.

In some jurisdictions it is possible for cyclists to report errant drivers to the police via camera footage and have that driver ticketed - the VPD are not interested in such footage.

It is ironic I can accidentally kill someone with a motorized vehicle and walk away with a fine YET if I accidentally kill someone with just about any other man-made object I would expect to spend some time in jail.

Drivers need to be aware that the penalty for inattentive driving and subsequent injury or death of another person carries more consequences than just a fine and a slap on the wrist driving restriction.

We need a vehicular manslaughter category in our provincial laws.

Yours Sincerely
