Join the Okanagan Historical Society Vernon Branch during BC Culture Days for an evening exploring the research, writing, and storytelling behind Vernon and District’s local history.

⚡️Do you know a Grade 4-8 reader working on strengthening their reading skills? These Hi-Lo Noah’s Text books are amazing!

Orca Book Publishers ‘s Noah Text editions of popular middle-grade novels help striving readers decode difficult words and build reading fluency.

We recently helped a young girl in grade 8 with dyslexia and a grade 4 reading level discover these books. Reading is challenging for her, and it’s tricky for her to find books she’ll stick with.

Her mom came in the next day to say, “She read 60 pages last night!” 🙌

How Noah Text Works:

📖Visual clues: Syllable patterns are highlighted in bold text to break up long words.

📖Vowel support: Long vowel sounds are underlined to make pronunciation clearer.

📖Reduced effort: It lowers the “decoding load” so students stay engaged with the story instead of getting frustrated.

⚡️Target audience: It helps striving readers, English language learners, and students with dyslexia in grades 4 through 8

The Burn Beast is a middle grade horror novel about disappearing kids and a monstrous beast lurking in the woods, from the author of The Curse of Eelgrass Bog.

As the daughter of private detectives, Pira is used to moving around a lot. So when her mothers’ newest case brings them to the small town of Eyrewood, she expects to find a town just like all the other ones she’s left behind.

But Eyrewood is nothing like she expects. Ash is always falling from the skies, the local wildlife is nowhere to be found, and it’s impossible to light a fire anywhere inside the town limits. And worst of all, there are monsters in the woods—monsters that none of the adults believe in.

When Pira joins up with a group of kids intent on fighting the beasts, she discovers that the monsters may be linked to a series of missing kids going back decades—including the older sister of her new friend Jackie. As Pira and Jackie work with their friends to solve the mystery of the disappearances, they’ll have to confront the secrets at the heart of Eyrewood and the danger lurking in every corner.

Shelley was among our OG Read Local Okanagan writers when we had a stall at the market. Quintland Sisters had just come out and it was BIG! I remember getting totally tongue-tied around her. But then, and now, she is as generous as can be. ❤️😍

✨✨Join us in celebrating the launch of welík’t, the debut poetry collection of Kalli Van Stone!

Kalli grew up on the Okanagan Indian Band, at nkmplqs or snyuxutan, and went to school in Vernon.

In welík’t (Nightwood Editions), she shares poems of the personal and familial—written in nsyilxcn, Secwepemctsin and English.

“A lot of the poems are like affirmations or things I cherish, and distinct in syilx and Secwepemc ways of thinking and relating to the land and each other,” says Kalli.

welík’t means sparkle ✨

Of its poems, author Jess Housty says: “welík’t is a text that shimmers; it is the glint of sunlight on a river, and it is the river, and it is the stones beneath the river...This book is an irresistible prayer that will leave you feeling grounded and enriched.”
