Welcome to the Mr Ugly Balls 2026 pageant where the uglier your balls the more likely you are to win! This year we have a packed field of contents consisting of "Mushroom Big Loop", "Giant Rusty Eyelet", "Even Rustier Giant Eyelet", and the "Malformed Twins". I'd also like to give a special mention to "Beer Can Weight" but he wasn't a ball so couldn't compete.

I was going to put this up to a vote but honestly the Flat Bottom Malformed Twin wins it on several fronts: Terrible Hydrodynamic, Asymmetrical Sides, A Weird Ni**le, A Flat Bottom, Non Clean Join Between Sides, and funny white spots.

There are no rewards for this competition as all these balls have met their Melter and have moved onto their next form that of ingots.

I want to give a big shout out to Fijian son fishing charters for an absolutely amazing trip today out of Cheanuh Marina. The currents were perfect so we fished off Race Rocks in over 200 feet of water for bottom fish, and we weren't disappointed!

We released several undersized Lingcod, small Rockfish and even an oversized Chinook we caught on a spreader bar while drifting in 400 feet of water. And ended the trip with 7 Dungeness crab, 2 lingcod, a chonky Cabezon and a rockfish.

His rates are also extremely affordable at $400 per person for 6 hours, and kids are free!

For a limited time a limited time I will be selling some 2LB and 3LB deep drip weights to recoup the cost of a brand new mold I bought. These won't be a permanent stock item as I prefer to focus on jigs.

Did two really good pours this week. Another batch of 70 plus 10oz minnows, and 12 and 15oz Anchovy jigs. The Anchovy is technically a retired mold but what fun is that if I don't occasionally pour some. Unlike my other jig molds the Anchovy actually has a curve to it right out or the mold.

DFO Officially published changes to the hook restrictions for fishing for salmon today. Ignore anyone that says it isn't going into effect as this is an official DFO communication via email and link below. If you haven't already signed up for the emails I strongly recommend you do as you'll know all upcoming opening and closures for species you may be targeting without relying on anyone else.

This should cover up to 5/0 singles (like clothes not all manufactures are 100% consistent with sizing so don't quote me). I will be ordering single barbed (you'll need to crimp them) and offer them as alternative to the trebles I have always used for people targeting salmon.

"To improve the survival of salmon being released by recreational fishers in tidal waters and support greater returns of stocks of concern to spawning grounds, thereby creating the next generation of salmon, the Department is introducing the following changes to the fishing gear permitted when fishing for salmon effective September 1, 2026:

Using a hook having more than one point (e.g., a treble hook) is no longer permitted when fishing for salmon in tidal waters; and

Using a single hook with a measurement greater than 22 millimeters from point to shank is not permitted when fishing for salmon in tidal waters (i.e., the gap width of the hook must be 22 mm or less when fishing for salmon).

These new gear measures apply to all tidal waters in the Pacific Region: Areas 1 to 29, 101 to 111, 121, 123 to 127, 130 and 142.

For clarity, the use of more than one single hook is permitted (e.g., using two single hooks in a tandem set up is permitted).

Shout out to Mike for sending the photo of the first fish caught with the new minnow pattern. He landed his personal best out of a Kayak with this 13.5LB after gutting and bleeding it. I have around 40 of these special edition minnows remaining of various colours.

Finally found my unicorn. After nearly 20 years of trying to find the perfect Minnow mold I have found it. Twenty years ago when my Grandfather passed away I got his tacklebox which included an unopened Silver & Green 200g (approx 7oz) Stingsild (not Stingsilda see photo below) that I caught over 200 fish before I lost it.

Needless to say losing such an amazing jig sent me on a quest to find a mold of a very similar jig. Initially I ordered some Stingsild in various sizes from Poland and using clay and plaster of Paris to make a similar jig with 80ish percent of the details that would break after 10 jigs and I'd have to make another.

Having to continually make new plaster molds I started searching online for more practical solution. The first similar mold I found was 280g and 420g cavities that I had to bend my own wire forms. The 280g was great but the 420g wasn't. I caught quite a few fish but it didn't pour fast enough due to effort bending wire forns.

My second mold was a 5oz 7oz 9oz - 3 chamber mold that took eyelets, and the 9oz quickly became my favorite catching lots of bottom fish and halibut. But the jig lacked detail and if I had to pour 100 9oz I had to pour it 100 times.

For my third mold I found someone to custom make it and had Stingsilds of several sizes shipped to them. Unfortunately I made the mistake of sending several sizes and he used the measurements ratio from a larger jig so it was shorter at 138mm than the previous 9oz at 150mm (see photos for each size). But it has three chambers and had the scale pattern so I could pump out hundreds much faster.

And yesterday I received my fourth and perfect mold. I went back to the mold maker and asked him to make it longer at 155mm and slightly increase the weight.

To celebrate the perfect mold I am going to do a limited run of 100 of these new jigs and bring some discontinued colour schemes out of retirement. These 10oz jigs will be $8 the same price simpler colours with a limit of 10 per person. After the 100 I will still offer them in these colours but they will be $9 each.

Another batch of 4oz Groundpounders and Minnows poured tonight. I needed to clean out my melters of hardish lead (better for vertical jigs) to replace it with soft lead to pour jig heads. Second photo is a reject as anything that doesn't meet my quality standards goes back into the melter. At 4oz around 5% don't meet my standards especially the minnows as they are so thin.

Looking to barter jigs with someone who can clean a kicker carburetor. I have a 2024 Yamaha F6 that doesn't want to start. Already replaced the spark plug and fresh gas. Located in Saanich.
