[SOF K9s are the biggest combat multiplier on the battlefield.

These Dual-purpose SOF K9s are instrumental in clearing enemy compounds, searching for explosives both en route to the target building and post assault, and chasing down the bad guys that ran out of the enemy structures. When searching for enemy combatants who ran to hide, the K9’s nose is the key instrument to find these individuals.

SOF K9 ‘s operate day or night, jump tandem out of airplanes with their handlers, fast rope out of helicopters, ride in vehicles, or fly with the assault force in helicopters to an enemy location.

Knowing the capability of the K9’s nose and with the increasing number of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), the US Military launched the Specialized Search Dog (SSD) to find these hidden devices.]

Did you know that dogs can be trained to locate odor in aquatic environments?

During a water search, the dog works from a boat while the handler carefully watches for subtle changes in body language that signal the presence of odor. Human scent compounds can travel unpredictably through the water—surfacing, dispersing, and shifting with currents, wind, temperature, and underwater obstacles. This means the strongest odor isn’t always directly above the source.

When the dog detects these odor changes, the handler interprets the dog’s behavior and helps direct the search. Combined with sonar or underwater imaging, these highly trained teams can pinpoint locations that would otherwise be extremely difficult to find.

These dogs don’t just detect scent—they provide answers, bring closure to families, and play a vital role in search and recovery operations.

Members of the 132e RIC demonstrate some of their capabilities during the Bastille Day 2026: National Day Parade.

The event featured a display of European solidarity and defense modernization, bringing together around 6,700 troops, 315 vehicles, 98 aircraft, and 31 helicopters in the face of ongoing global security challenges.

This cli highlights, the Cynotechnical Infantry Regiment (132e RIC) the French Army’s Official Ministry of Armed Forces Profile specialized military dog unit, located in Suippes, France. It trains handler-dog teams for tracking, combat support, and explosive detection.

The phrase “2*” (Two Asterisk) a play on “Two Asses to Risk”, a reminder that every deployment carries the weight of two lives, handler and K9, bound together in purpose and consequence.
