David Western Lovespoons I handcarve stunning wooden lovespoons to custom commission. All my lovespoons are completely handcarved by me.

My lovespoons are the perfect gift for an engagement, wedding, anniversary or other occassion when only the very best will do! I do not make use of computer or laser guided cutters in any way. Each of my spoons is a work of finest craftsmanship and design which will bring a lifetime of pleasure.

In the mid to late 1800's fretwork became all the rage and lovespoons (especially in Wales and Sweden) began to become much larger panelled to show it off. This facsimile Welsh spoon was carved from an old block of figured maple that 150 years ago had been destined for a violin back. Somewhere along the way, its partner piece had been lost, so the piece sat at the bottom of a pile. Many years and many shops later, it wound up with me and is now enjoying a new life as a classic lovespoon!

A few years back I went on an 'authenticity' kick and made a number of historically accurate facsimile Welsh lovespoons. Partly a learning exercise and partly to rebel against the 'souvenir spoon' design that has become the norm for Welsh lovespoons in our modern era, working 'old school' gave me a much deeper appreciation for how wonderful the old spoons were. This one was carved from an old piece of broken furniture. It's yew wood and some of a contrasting joint wood can still be seen in the bowl. This renders it unsellable...but that's ok because I love it!!

For me, this very simple, 'rustic' spoon (that I patterned on a couple of old museum pieces) truly embodies all that is great about the Welsh lovespoon tradition. Although it is the type of naive design that would have been carved by a lovestruck and largely untrained young man (using absolutely rudimentary tools such as an axe, a knife and a home-made bent knife); this spoon illustrates the kind of unbridled passion and enthusiasm that would have been thrown into creating a memorable and meaningful love token. Yes, it's crudely carved and it isn't particularly artistic, but there is no doubt that FEELING was poured into this carving. Maybe in our cynical modern world this spoons would be looked down on...but back in the day, the recipient of this effort would know that the presenter gave it his best shot!!

A little departure from my usual thing! I made some ceramics tools for a friend of mine...but figured even though there wasn't much carving involved, there was no reason not to go over the top with the wood selection! Some prime scraps that were too good for the bin just got a second life!!!

I love Breton style cuillères d’apparat, which are more commonly (although a bit erroneously) known in English as Breton wedding spoons. I readily confess that I struggle mightily with the hinges and am never 100% satisfied with them. To improve a bit, I have been making these more art deco styled hinged spoons. They look nice AND they are a considerable challenge! Total respect to my friends Jane Mickelborough and Herve Lorant who knock these hinges off in their sleep!!!

I'm at it again with the anniversary spoons! This one is a 30year BUT it's also a souvenir of a special trip to Canada. Carved from a beautiful slice of pacific yew wood and inlayed with Douglas fir, yellow cedar and broadleaf maple hearts, it has some poignant and symbolic messages and I hope will be a nice remembrance of a visit to the stunning islands of Canada's west coast!

If you’re going to make a 40th Anniversary lovespoon….don’t mess around! This one is absolutely loaded with symbolic imagery. Four strands of closed Celtic knotwork twining symbolize eternity, 4 stems of barley symbolizing growth and 4 maple leaves to symbolize home also all symbolize forty years of marriage. Initials and dates appear in the love hearts and 14 flowers represent the day it all started. A dragon and a Breton ermine along with a tiny Celtic triskele symbolize ancestry. Just below them, a rowan leaf and berries symbolize protection and life. The two heart shaped bowls represent the idea of ‘we two are as one’ and the little frog is a little symbol of a cheeky nickname. Try to beat THAT with a f**king toaster or a power saw!!
