According to BC Cancer Foundation, 1 in 7 people will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my freckles. They are a nod to my dad and my paternal grandma who I inherited them from. I can’t imagine looking in the mirror and not having them. But with that said, it’s important to understand what they actually are. And important to remember, that I was not born with them.
July is UV Awareness Month. Here are some things to keep in mind:
☀️ SPF, 365 a year, is just as important for your health as brushing your teeth.
☀️ Layering a Vitamin C serum under your daily SPF, in our opinion, should be considered a daily health product, not a skincare “vanity” desire
☀️ Reapplication of sunscreen (mineral or chemical/synthetic) needs to happen every 2 hours while outdoors. This is because we sweat, the product breaks down, separates on your skin, and then leaves open spaces of “uncovered” skin. Reapply more if in and out of water.
☀️ Along with SOF, seeking shade, wearing a hat, sunnies, and a long sleeve shirt are the easiest ways to help yourself stay sun smart.
☀️ Lastly, fearing the sun is not healthy. But seeking a tan is ALSO not healthy 😂. A tan is a sign of sun damage. It is your body’s natural response to help protect it from further damage. Slightly sun-kissed skin through your SPF this summer? We consider that a sign of memories made and a life well lived. Lying out to intentionally “get colour” - we’ve got SUNNATAN Sunless Skincare for that instead! If you’re still pulled to do this, read the above BC Cancer stat again so you know the risks.
☀️ If health won’t make you do it, perhaps vanity will 😂🤷🏻♀️. No judgement as I think we’ve all been there with various things in our lives! So here’s the thing - the sun is the biggest external factor for the signs of aging you see on your skin. And the visible signs of this tend to start to accelerate in your late 30’s. Your cheapest “anti-aging” solution is reducing sun exposure and 365
SPF 😉
If you have kids, or a man in your life (let’s be honest)…one of the most loving things you can do is talk about these facts!
