Sad news for the LGBTQ community of Waterloo Region. Thom was a regular at Gen X for many years and very supportive of the store. We did our best to make sure we had a great collection of LGBTQ films and he often brought new people in to show them our shelf (which was built, quite purposefully, on the outside door of a closet). The world is a little less with his passing but still greater for having had him in it while he was here. Rest easy, Thom.

He volunteered for years with the Tri-Pride festival and with Spectrum, the region’s first LGBTQ community space

It was 25 years ago today that we opened our doors and our first customer, Marjorie, came in and rented The Power of One.

We know we've been gone a long time and won't be back but we miss most of you still. We had almost 20,000 titles when we closed and would likely be closer to 30,000 if we'd made it this far. Our collection was better than any streaming service but definitely not as convenient and we understand why video stores went away. Our time as a community hub for Uptown Waterloo was wonderful though.

The GenX crew has spread around the world with ex-staffers in the US, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Colombia taking their love of cinema with them.

Barbaryan Leandres managed to open the The Adventurers Guild - Board Game Café & Tavern, in Kitchener, and is still preaching the gospel of people coming together in a social space for good. It is a wonderful store and the ghost of GenX lives on there. Go check it out if you ever really, really miss us.

Thank you to everyone who helped make us what we were. It would have been nice to make it to our 25th anniversary, where we would have had Tom Waits play live in the store, but the memories are almost as good.

Happy (Saddy?) Anniversary everyone! We've missed you all over the last year and we hope you've found other ways to enjoy fine cinema (or crappy films) since our passing.

Have you been to the new Seven Shores in the old Gen X space yet? It looks awesome in there and their counter is made of the old Generation X Video shelves. Go support a great local business and eat some fantastic food and drink some of the best coffee in Waterloo Region. Sean claims there will be some more Gen X tribute touches in the future.

Simple. Ethical. Relational.

Yep. This is the kind of movie we used to love to bring to Waterloo Region. Sadly, you'll have to use less wholesome methods to see it now. Thank you Norway for taking silliness so seriously.

Forget vampires, Trolls are the new thing. Finally a refreshing original horror movie! "The Troll Hunter" is seriously going to be the neatest horror movie for 2010. Go norway!

You didn't think we'd be silent forever did you?

Waterloo region residents can help Japan and see what is pretty much the greatest movie by anyone anywhere at Cinematheque Waterloo's screening of SEVEN SAMURAI, Mar 22nd at the original Princess Cinema. Proceeds go to the Red Cross.

PRESENTED BY CINEMATHEQUE WATERLOO • 35mm Print! • “What makes The Seven Samurai such a great film? It's not just that the characters are complex or interesting: they are complete. Each person you meet is intelligent, serious, funny, melancholy, nostalgic, bitter, strong. Each character is as real

oh my God—it's full of stars!

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to close the store.

150 minutes until we pull the plug on the universe. Prepare for the end!

02/26/2011

Okay folks, ya'll got from Noon to 4 pm to get what you want from Gen X today. If you need more incentive to show up I'll just say these two lovely words, "Free Candy".
