What can you learn from FISHBUOY?

This is a great example of how river anglers can learn about river response to precipitation.

A huge system just ran through southern Ontario. See right image. Left image shows a water gauge and the response to how rain has affected water level and flow. So what?

Steelheaders are always looking at water levels. It helps them determine if a river is fishable or not. It also helps them learn about latency. Latency is the lag in water conditions response to rain. Eg. Once it's starts raining, how long will it take a particular river to get too dirty to fish. Or, how long will it take a river to rise too high to fish. Every river is different and anglers will literally plan their trip around estimating when the rain event will change the river to a desired or undesired state.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR FEET WARM?

Okay, I see this question alot. Here are my 40 years of experience when it comes to keeping my feet warm whether ice fishing, snowmobiling or wading icy waters.

1) Buy boots 1.5 to 2 sizes bigger. These boots are your outdoor boots only, not to be mistaken for everyday use. You will always have two pairs of socks when wearing these.

2) Pull full boot insulation layer out and always add a new felt insole. Put back the full insulation layer often made of felt or some foiltech material.

3) Wear merino wool socks. One thin wicking pair followed by a thick pair.

4) When driving from your home to your fishing spot in your car, don't wear both layers of socks, just the wicking pair and wear shoes that breathe. If your socks are moist before you get to your spot, you have already lost.

5) When putting on your second pair of heavy socks and boots, don't get them wet. We often change outside and during the layerup we step into snow or puddles - again keep feet dry.

The boots I have used for ice fishing are those rubber kamik insulated boots. Inexpensive but keep your feet dry when you have slush on the water. Worst thing is when your boots are not 100% waterproof.

Finally, never wear the same pair of socks the next day. After one day of use, they lose their ability to hold heat. And.... Make sure you pull the boot insulation and insole out to dry each night.

I've fished many years in cold cold conditions. These steps are the ticket to warm feet and you don't need to break the bank.

Don't think I've ever seen wave heights reach 15 ft on . That was last week. Our app is designed to display past conditions so you can start to better understand how wind affects wave height, and how wave height will affect your decision to fish or stay home. So you are planning another annual fishing trip - but really not sure what conditions are like. You've fished the same spot before and caught fish, and trying to remember the baits/lures you used, what the water clarity was, what the level or flow was at, and what the weather conditions were like. For some, this is an annual trip that requires coordinating time between family and work. Of course, you want to pick the time when conditions are perfect.
