Warning‼️ I am about to go full blown dahlia geek.
Dahlias with petaloids are becoming the absolute rage on social media this year. Well, you all knew when my first dahlia with petaloids bloomed, I would go crazy. I did go crazy.
So what’s a petaloid? It’s an added floral structure inside each petal. So it gives a full, frilly appearance. Every single row of petals from Lileah Saffron Petticoats has these petaloids. After I obsessed over it for a good while, I cut it and then pulled out some petals to look at the petaloids close up. It was a good time. I do these things for fun. I don’t live a very crazy life.
So what do you think of petaloids?? Super cool or not so much?

Always a pleasure seeing Hollyhill Daydream blooming in the field. This is my third season with it, and I still adore it. Quick tip: if you want extra fluffy blooms for photos, take your photos of waterlily varieties in the evening when they cup their petals. Daytime photos of waterlily dahlias don’t do them justice. Even if you have to sacrifice your body to mosquitoes while getting your evening photos. 😁

You all know I lose my mind when I spot a fluffy waterlily, but a pure white, fluffy waterlily? Even dreamier. This one is so cupped up and perfect. I kinda love it. 🥺

Florelie Flamingo just gets sweeter with time! This is a brand new release, and I actually love it so so much! Layers of petals, lots of vigour, long stems, pretty much everything I could ask for! Would you grow this new Australian variety?

You know what’s so special about this dahlia? I grew it from a dahlia seed in the house last year! Which means that it’s a totally new variety since it was cross pollinated and is not a clone of its seed parent. Which also means that maybe, just maybe, I will one day name it and release it!
Growing from seed has a very very low success rate because it seems that most of the dominate traits are the traits that don’t make very lovely flowers. This particular seedling needs to be evaluated for at least another year, but my dream is to one day get way more into breeding new dahlia varieties like this one. A girl can dream, right? 🤍

👀 Look who showed up to the party! Only the original gangsta of the dahlia world, Czarny Charakter! 🖤
A lot of people hate Czarny, which is fair enough, but I personally think black flowers are incredible. How often do you see pure black flowers blooming in a garden? Like come on! This dahlia has no red or purple tones; it’s completely black even if photos distort it somewhat.
What do you think of Czarny Charakter? Yeah or nah? 🤷🏼‍♀️
