Arts Underground The central hub for artists and art lovers in Whitehorse & Yukon, operated by the Yukon Art Society. The Yukon Art Society was founded in April of 1970.

Not only is it the oldest visual arts organization in the Yukon, but with a membership of around 150 members, it is the largest. The size and longevity of this grassroots organization can be explained in part by its inclusiveness policy. All artists are welcome to join.

Join us tonight from 5-7pm for the opening reception of our two October exhibitions, ‘Lumina’ by Alaena Warner in the Focus Gallery and ‘From the Margins’ by Blood Ties Four Directions in the Edge Gallery. Thank you to our exhibition sponsor Yukon Brewing

‘Lumina’ examines the life cycles of the boreal forest as a metaphor for life transitions and subsequent transformation. ‘From the Margins’ culminates a year of arts programming at Blood Ties and features work created by community members who use substances and those with lived experiences of marginalization.

It’s also another First Friday! Yukon Artists at Work is opening ‘Where We Live’ by Pat Bragg and Friends, and Northern Cultural Expressions Society will be hosting an artist showcase of work by Violet Gatensby.

Visit all three galleries during the art crawl to be entered into a draw for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate sponsored by Air North, Yukon's Airline.

Collagraphy Printmaking with Anick Fernandez

Collagraphy is a non-toxic printmaking technique in which various materials are glued onto a plate. The objective of this workshop is to introduce both the theory and practice of collagraphy with a special focus on experimentation and creativity.

Work will be done on cardboard and acetate plates with a wide variety of materials including varnishes and impasto mediums. Different inking techniques will be demonstrated, and all the works will be printed.

No previous printmaking experience is required.

Join local artist Asia Hyde for this two-session block printing workshop.

In this introductory print making workshop you will learn the basics of lino printing and how to print on fabric. With the techniques covered in this class, participants will have the knowledge needed to start block printing on their own if they decided to invest in the supplies. Everyone in the class will walk away with two hand printed bandanas and their hand carved lino blocks that can be reused over and over again.

All materials will be supplied, but please bring a clean wooden spoon from home for Session 2!

What piece was the most difficult to create? Why?

“The hardest painting in the collection is a self-portrait where I'm looking in the mirror and seeing my reflection in double vision. It's based on looking at myself mid-migraine aura and barely recognizing myself. I find self-portraits challenging because you have to navigate competing intentions for the work. In this case, I wanted a strong composition, the expressive and textured style I used to render migraine experiences, and an image that actually looked like me.

There's also a desire, which I think social media and societal beauty standards contribute to, to beautify ourselves in portraits, and I struggled to resist that. The first rough draft looked like me, but as I layered on textures and brushstrokes, it started looking less like me and more like a "beautified" version of me, almost like me with an Instagram filter. That was the opposite of what I wanted to capture about the rawness of the experience, so I had to start over a few times. Eventually, I got it to a point I can live with.”
