Wi’kipaltimk 2025 - A Gathering for All to Commemorate Indian Day School Survivors & Celebrate Mi’kmaq Culture - Open Hearth Park, Sydney August 8-10, 2025

We’re reaching out with a heartfelt invitation to support Wi’kipaltimk – A Mawio’mi (Gathering) for All, a powerful three-day event happening August 8–10, 2025 at Open Hearth Park in Sydney, Unama’ki (Cape Breton).
Wi’kipaltimk, the Mi’kmaq word for feast, is a sacred act of gathering with purpose—a space for honouring Indian Day School Survivors, celebrating Mi’kmaq culture, and fostering healing, unity, and reconciliation.
This gathering is being held to commemorate Indian Day School Survivors and to celebrate and uplift Mi’kmaq culture through art, music, storytelling, food, and community. Wi’kipaltimk will feature:
Mawio’mi/Powwow
Cultural Demonstrations
Live daily performances by Indigenous artists
A vendor marketplace featuring Indigenous crafters and artisans
Youth programming & workshops
Food experiences
We’re currently seeking volunteers to help bring this vision to life and support the flow of the event with care and cultural sensitivity. Roles may include:
Pre-event support
Volunteers, Registration and info booth support
Production Team support & runner
Site upkeep
General hospitality, support and runner roles
Helping Elders and guests navigate the space
Artist and marketplace coordination support
Youth program and workshop assistance
Event logistics and set-up/tear-down
Green room support
PowWow
Cultural Village
Whether you’re available for a few hours, a full day or all three days, your presence and energy can help make this gathering truly special. A training and orientation overview will be provided, and all volunteers will receive cultural awareness resources in advance.

Reunion Cafe is a new groundbreaking monthly Cacao ceremony hosted by UK singer-songwriter Jont at Music on the Hill in Sydney Mines. Effortlessly blending the fun of a party and a gig with the intentionality and emotional power of a sacred song ceremony, Reunion Cafe presents native and non-native local songwriters and bands in an alcohol-free environment that feels like a cozy living-room. DJ Analog spins vinyl and cassettes. Hot cacao is drunk ceremonially at the start, and a Mi’kmaq song is sung. Jont - who has put on music events like this around the world over the last 25 years - helps guide the audience into a place of focus and relaxation before each artist performs.
Neo-shamanic Cacao ceremonies have been growing in popularity around the world in the last couple of decades. The cacao (the raw, unprocessed source of chocolate) drunk with intention can bring a feeling of “heart-opening”, grounding oneself in a settled but uplifting way - that can be good for listening, singing, and dancing. All of which you will likely be doing if you come to Reunion Cafe on March 1st!
This month we are deeply honoured to have Mi’kmaq singer-songwriter Hubert Francis join us, and alongside him local artists Sonnie Greening and Bethany June will play short sets followed by Jont & The Fish.

You are all invited on Monday Evening July 24, 2023 at the Chief Wayne Googoo Peace and Unity Stage. Debuting the “Marshall Brothers Variety Show” with special guest Our very own Mikmaq Legend Hubert Francis. Preforming as well is Sandy Googoo from Wekomaq First Nation.

Following these performances we will be showcasing our Young Musicians.

Ty ‘s Takout and the Marshall Brothers Variety are sponsoring these Monday night events designated to help support youths in music. Ty Googoo Merle Marshall and Owen Joseph Marshall are collaborating to bring this wonderful event to life for the summer.

Admission to the event is a donation of any size. The show will also air on FB live and online donations will also be accepted. All of the proceeds from this event goes to purchasing guitars and other instruments for our Youth. We have a great group of artists that are volunteering their time and donating these inspirational shows to help our young artists have that space so that they can shine in music and in arts!
