I have decided to make this letter public because the issues facing downtown Williams Lake affect more than one business.

Every day, my staff and I come to work wondering: **Is the store intact?**

My landlord is now considering steel security shutters for our storefront. I understand why — but I refuse to believe that turning our downtown businesses into fortresses is the best answer we can come up with.

I support helping people struggling with addiction, mental illness, trauma, and homelessness. I also believe the public has a right to ask how much money is being spent, what results are being achieved, and whether our community is actually becoming safer.

This is not about blaming one person, one organization, or one level of government.

It is about asking our municipal, provincial, and federal leaders — and those seeking office — to work together, audit what is currently being spent, measure the results, and be willing to change what is not working.

**There has to be a better way.**

My full open letter is below. I welcome respectful discussion and, more importantly, practical solutions.
