I planted my first elderberry bush last year. I made sure to cut it back in the early winter and she has produced elderflowers and berries for me! Grateful and blessed !

New from the Shoppe: herbal rune charm bottles. Three so far, more coming.

Each one starts with a single question — what does this rune actually say, and what grows to match it. Not “witchy herbs that look nice together.” The Rune Poem first, the plant second.

Sigel — the sun rune. Mægðe from my own gravel drive, coneflower and sweet William stacked gold on gold. The seafarer’s mark, the thing you steer by.

Þorn — no mercy in the poem, none in the bottle. Rose, whole plant, petal and leaf and thorn. Hagaþorn laid in after — hedge-thorn, the plant that builds the boundary rather than marking it.

Rād — the riding rune. Mugwort and waybread, the eldest herb and the road itself. For the difference between talking about a journey and being out on one.

Each disc is set flush against the glass, hand-filled, corked and twine-bound. No two stack the same way because no two batches of herb dry the same way.

Every so often someone finds this shop, sees the Old English, and assumes they’ve found a friend. Let me save you the message.
Wyrd is a web. Every thread pulled through every other. There is no strand in it that stands alone and no strand that belongs to one people. That’s the whole cosmology — you cannot hold the shape of it in your head and also believe in a pure line.
The folk who wrote the Leechbook and the Lacnunga were working with Mediterranean pepper, with Christian prayer sat next to charms older than the church, with whatever came up the trade roads. Their world was mixed. Ours is too. “Blood and soil” is a modern invention wearing a very old coat, and the coat doesn’t fit.
Gyfu means a gift, and a guest given hospitality. Frith is the peace you keep with the people around you. These are the bones of the tradition. Racists have neither.
So: no fascists, no folkish, no exceptions. If that costs me a sale, good — I’d rather keep the frith.
