Hāligmōnaþ
The Anglo-Saxons left us no record of an equinox festival, but Bede tells us September was Hāligmōnaþ, the holy month, a month of sacred rites. He doesn’t say what those rites were, but at harvest’s end the answer isn’t hard to guess.

So tonight’s offering is simple:
bread from this year’s grain
a horn of mead
apples
mugwort and clary sage from the garden, dried this summer

Given in thanks for what the year brought in, and a share set out for the house wights before the dark half turns. Bede tells us winter began at the full moon of Winterfylleþ, and that’s only a few weeks off now.

I’m bringing my hand crafted besma’s Into The Void my Wyrdlings!

Crāwan Besma
Mugwort and Queen Anne’s lace, bound with jute. Duck feather, and a single crow claw. At the crown, an atlas vertebra dyed in madder root — the bone that once bore a skull, now bearing none. One of these plants I grew on purpose. The other one grew anyway. Mugwort comes out of my dye garden in Kingsville, deliberately planted — though it’s the kind of plant that would have turned up whether I’d invited it or not. Queen Anne’s lace I cut from a field edge, where it gets sprayed for the crime of existing. Mucgwyrt is Una, eldest of herbs in the Nine Herbs Charm — a sweeping-herb centuries before anyone thought to smoke it.

Hung by the door, or laid across the threshold.

Sourcing: Mugwort and madder grown and dyed by me. Queen Anne’s lace wild-foraged locally. Crow claw ethically obtained in England. Duck feathers commercially sourced. Made by hand, one at a time.

Crow throwing bones — double dyed

Madder root first, then black walnut over top. The madder sinks in and the walnut pulls it dark, so what comes out is rust and bitter brown, and no two sets land the same.

The Herb Witch Shoppe is bringing the whole strange lot to St. Thomas.

Hexes & Jinxes — Saturday, October 4th, 10am–5pm at the Elgin County Railway Museum, hosted by Purely Wicked. Over 100 vendors under one roof, and I’ll be among them with:

· Wyrd bottles and charm flasks
· Naturally dyed bones and skulls — madder, woad, walnut, weld
· Besoms, wreaths, and runic work
· Hand-blended incense — Wyrtcræft, Nihtgenga, Swefen
· Seeds from the dye garden — woad, mugwort, nettle, comfrey, sweet cicely
· New: Witch of Wyrd linen — naturally dyed bags for herbs, tisanes, and the kitchen

Everything grown, gathered, or dyed by hand in Kingsville. Come say hello, ask me what’s in the bottle, and I’ll tell you which leechbook it came out of.
