There’s a lot of bullying in our world right now.
We see it online. We see it in the way people speak to one another. We see it in our communities. And sadly, our children are seeing it — and experiencing it — at school.
Sometimes it feels as though cruelty has become easier. A harsh comment, a laugh at someone else’s expense, excluding someone because they’re different. Words can be thrown around so quickly, but the person receiving them may carry those words for a very long time.
Be Kind Cork + Jewelry was born from something very close to my heart.
Years ago, a former student of mine attempted su***de. It affected me deeply and made me think about the things people carry that we may know absolutely nothing about.
I wanted to create something that could serve as a small reminder — to be kind to others, but also to ourselves.
That doesn’t mean we have to be positive every minute of every day. Life can be difficult. People can disappoint us. We get angry, frustrated, hurt and overwhelmed. Kindness isn’t always the easiest choice.
But it is still a choice.
And I believe it is one of the most important choices we can make.
Our children are watching us. They are listening to the way we speak about people who are different from us. They are learning from how we disagree, how we handle anger, and how we treat someone who may not be able to give us anything in return. We may not be able to fix everything that feels wrong in the world right now.
But we can change the little piece of the world around us.
We can include someone.
We can speak up when someone is being bullied.
We can choose our words more carefully.
We can remind someone that they matter.
We can teach our children that being kind is never a weakness.
And when being kind feels difficult, maybe that’s when it matters most.
I started Be Kind Cork + Jewelry because I wanted the pieces I create to mean something more than jewelry. I wanted them to be little reminders that we are all human, we are all carrying something, and we all have the ability to make someone’s day — and sometimes their life — a little better.
