It is with complete sadness that I regret to inform you that George Sumka, proud founder of Sumka Brothers Greenhouses, passed away suddenly on April 20th.
Dad proudly started Sumka Brothers Greenhouses in 1977 with the love and support of his wife (Mary) and his brother(s) Paul and Peter. Together, from a small roaming sugar-shack, they built a Transcona destination that was loved and cherished by you, our devoted customers, for 47 years.
Dad did not pretend to be a businessman, rather he prided himself on being a simple flower farmer who wanted the greenhouse to be a sanctuary - a place where anybody who needed work or help could find it, a “Disney World” for gardening enthusiasts, but mostly just HOME for anyone who wanted to feel like family. At times, Dad’s passion for perfection could come across as gruff and a bit too old-school, but if you took the time to listen and learn, you’d have realized that his words were always driven by his intense love for his work and Sumka Brothers beautiful products.
Dad adamantly turned away several developers who foolishly tried to “steal” away his garden center until, in 2024, the school division asked to build a school on the property. Because the land would be purposely used to serve the children of the community, Dad agreed to the sale. Dad loved kids, especially his grandchildren (Zander, Cailey, Miller, Mia, Miley, Carter, & Ivy) more than ANYTHING in the world. And Sumka Brothers Greenhouses closed its doors.
I would like to thank you all for your love and support for both the greenhouses and especially my Dad. He looked forward each and every spring morning to clicking on that open sign and letting you all in to see his whole heart.
He will be missed beyond measure.
Big hugs,
Maryann & Kristin
