Good Thursday morning! Silverware is a popular item that people bring in to the store and most of the time it's only silver plated, which we don't take. What's the difference between silver plated and sterling silver items? Plated items will only be covered in silver but are made mostly of a base metal like copper. Plated items can still look and act like silver without it being solid. Sterling silverware, cups, plates, teapots etc. are at least 92% solid silver and won't turn green for an acid test.

How can you tell the difference at home? Stamps! Often times the brand will give it away and sometimes it will say "Silver Plated X" on the back of the handles or the bottoms/rims of cups and plates.

Good stamps:
- "Birks Sterling"
-"925"
-lion symbol on European sets

Bad stamps:
-"EPNS"
-"copper base"
-"silver plated brass"
-"Oneida", "Community" and "Rogers" sets (unless it says sterling)

Take a look at your silver before coming to save yourself a trip. Not sure if it has a stamp or it's worn out? No worries! Bring it in anyways and our staff can quickly test a few pieces.
