I have a friend who is a mushroom forager. She seems to know everything about fungi. She can recognize the varieties out in the wild, knows which ones are safe to eat and which to avoid. She knows how to store and cook them. Her home has mushroom decorations. She is a true mushroom lover.

Me, I think mushrooms are cute little plants that Mother Nature scatters around. I know the varieties by the labels at the grocery store. I associate them with gnomes and fairies, magic, dragons and ancient knowledge.

I’m taking some time to reflect on how truly blessed I am.

I’ve accepted that if I laugh too hard or suddenly sneeze that I’ll probably p*e a little. My nose whistles a bit when I breathe. I ignore my old lady hip and the creaky knees. These are minor issues. I’m relatively healthy and I am grateful for that.

My house appears to be falling apart around me. It needs so many repairs, some big, some small and the list seems endless. But it’s warm and dry and safe. I’m grateful to have a place to live.

My kitchen is always a mess and cooking is not my favourite task. I’m sick of figuring out what’s for dinner every. single. day. There’s food in the fridge and the cupboards aren’t bare. I’m grateful that I don’t have to worry about my next meal.

I seem to work all the time. I don’t get a real break, or a vacation or a regular paycheque. I get to bring my dog to work. I get to talk to some incredible people and do what I love. I’m incredibly grateful every day for my little shoppe and everyone who makes it possible.

I am thankful that I have the ability to recognize my fears, complaints and problems and balance them with their other side. The challenges help me see the blessings. Sometimes, when the troubles are big, the gifts are hard to find. That’s when my friends step in and give me a hand. I have so much to grateful for.

One of the best things about my little shoppe (besides getting to bring Emma to work every day) is getting to participate in some community events. The best ones are the ones that are easy, bring new people to our shoppe and are fun for us too.

We’ve been participating in Tricks for Treats since their first event. We’ve watched it grow. We’ve seen some of the same awesome dogs and families visit us. We’ve met new friends and their canine companions. We even met a cat!

Tricks for Treats is a fundraiser for the Manitoba All Shepherd Rescue and it’s so much fun!

If you happen to be in our little shoppe on Saturday, October 17, don’t be surprised if things are a little crazy, chaotic and the place has gone to the dogs!

We’re celebrating ten years of being in business and events like this are just one of the things we love putting on our calendar. Thanks for an incredible decade!
