Custom SE Line Source — Dave Brubeck Touring System

Pictured during setup in the Grosser Saal at Casino Bern, this custom SE line source touring system was designed and built by Jürgen Strauss for legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck.

Developed specifically for touring and concert-hall applications, the modular system was engineered for efficient transport, assembly and dismantling while maintaining the controlled coverage and acoustic performance expected of a STRAUSS ELEKTROAKUSTIK system.

Every STRAUSS ELEKTROAKUSTIK Custom Monitoring project begins with the client and the intended application. We work directly with artists, venues, studios, institutions and system designers to understand the acoustic environment, coverage requirements, listening distances, output demands, workflow and practical constraints—then develop a loudspeaker system precisely suited to them.

This same approach continues today across recording and mastering studios, immersive facilities, concert halls, research environments and touring productions, creating custom monitoring systems for applications where a standard loudspeaker format is simply not enough.

Analog Reference Monitoring Equalizer

The SE REQ-1S extends the STRAUSS ELEKTROAKUSTIK reference-monitoring method beyond the loudspeaker and into the monitoring signal path itself.

Developed for professional studios, mastering rooms and high-end listening systems, the SE REQ-1S allows room-related spectral imbalances to be addressed and the system response precisely tailored to the preferred target curve while maintaining the spatial, transient and dynamic integrity required for critical listening.

Key design features include:

• 18 fully parametric bands for precise acoustic calibration
• High- and low-frequency shelving filters for broadband tonal shaping
• Dual-mono architecture for independent left- and right-channel calibration
• –6 dB input pad for additional gain-management flexibility
• Noise floor below –120 dB
• Fully analog signal path with no DSP or conversion latency

Maintaining a fully analog correction path offers numerous advantages throughout critical listening, mixing, mastering and system evaluation.

Consider, for example, comparing two high-end A/D converters used to capture an analog mix or master. The objective is to accurately evaluate the digital result produced by each converter.

When an analog monitoring signal is routed through DSP-based correction, it must first undergo A/D conversion, followed by digital processing and D/A conversion for playback. Those processes exist only within the monitoring path and are not contained in the recorded mix or final master.

The SE REQ-1S allows room-related response issues to be corrected and the target curve precisely tailored without adding those digital processes to the monitoring chain.

The result is a listening environment calibrated for the room and tailored to the user’s preferred response while maintaining a fully analog signal path with no added conversion latency.

Elektroakustik Journal Vol. 5 | Two-Way Systems — Homogeneous Radiation

In theory, the ideal loudspeaker would be an infinitely small point source capable of reproducing the full audible spectrum at any required level, with constant directivity, correct timing, and no distortion.

The difficulty is that loudspeakers are not infinitely small. Low frequencies require radiating area and displacement, while high frequencies impose very different demands on diaphragm behavior. Full-range systems generally use multiple radiators.

Their integration shapes both the directly radiated sound and the energy distributed into the room.

Each crossover requires integration of two radiation patterns. A three-way system reduces the bandwidth demanded from each driver, but adds a second integration region, making a slowly rising directivity index more difficult to maintain.

In a conventional coaxial driver, the surrounding cone forms part of the high-frequency waveguide, so its movement can modulate the high-frequency output. The central high-frequency assembly constrains the cone profile and the larger radiator’s behavior near the crossover. Coincident geometry alone does not guarantee point-source behavior.

Separate radiators can be optimized more independently, but spacing, directivity, phase, and timing through the crossover must be integrated precisely.

This is what makes large-format two-way systems so demanding to design. They require unusually capable transducers with wide, low-distortion operating ranges. The low-frequency driver must extend unusually high while remaining controlled, low in distortion, and low in compression; the high-frequency driver and horn must operate unusually low while preserving output and stable directivity. Developing and integrating the drivers, filters, geometry, and alignment is technically difficult and resource-intensive.

When these requirements are met, a single crossover region can support a slowly and continuously rising directivity index, homogeneous radiation, and more predictable room interaction.

Jesse has worked with STRAUSS ELEKTROAKUSTIK systems for years, beginning with the SE NF-3. Today, the SE MF-4 serves as the reference system in his Nashville mix room, while the SE NF-3 continues to travel with him when working from other commercial studios, maintaining a consistent reference from room to room.

Last year, Jesse visited The SE MUSICLAB in Bern, Switzerland, where he met with Jürgen Strauss and featured the experience on his YouTube channel. During his visit, he mixed on the SE MF-2.1 reference system in THE LAB for the first time — a space where architecture, room acoustics, and electroacoustics are brought together as a single integrated system.
