THOUGHTFUL PERSPECTIVES ON LOST EMOTIONS, LANGUAGE, AND HUMOUR.
Rhona Mühlebach knows that nature, in all her beauty, does not have a sense of humour. She is devoid of irony, empathy, kindness, or cruelty. Despite this emotional vacuum, interacting with the wilderness can be a deeply moving experience, allowing us to empathise with the natural world in a profound way. This semi-mystical ability to connect with nature serves as the philosophical foundation for the video works of artist Rhona Mühlebach. The artist crafts her work in English, employing unexpected moments of linguistic trickery that unveil multiple layers of meaning, suggested by the subtlest of intonations in the artist’s voice. Such artworks, and the artist’s own performance, breathes a new kind of life into what might otherwise be painted as still and sombre natural landscapes. Perhaps by introducing a small self-deprecating joke while considering the dignity of an ancient pathway, or comparing the tragedy of total ecological collapse to a hot drink left to go stone cold. Mühlebach spreads a certain dry humour throughout each work that brings perspective and clarity to crucial questions about the effects of human interaction with our environment, and our perceptions of the wider world outside of our control. With a characteristically dead pan delivery of devastatingly funny quips and of seriously scary statistics, they inject depth to the conversation surrounding the relationship between humans and nature. Through her work.

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN PHILOSOPHY AND AESTHETICS.
Thomas Julier’s practice is to question representation, most prominently, the representation of human and animal bodies. Julier looks at what is represented and how, not only through context but by method, and how these constructs effect the image and how it is perceived. Held within the image are its myriad meanings, and it is Julier’s aim to make these questions palpable in his works, both sensorially and intellectually. The answer lies somewhere between philosophy and aesthetics. The image transforms when its denotations are extracted, and these transformations form the basis of his works. As technology has developed, so has Julier’s practice, photography merging with data science, computer-generated images and artificial intelligence readings. His works serve as orientation markers of their own making, de-mystifying the role of complex technologies in manipulating images. And yet, we are still left questioning. What is an accurate representation?

PHOTOAUTOMAT PLUS STYLE.
Necessity is the mother of invention, and Gabriel Stöckli really has a need to create. Working exclusively with analogue formats, and with the materials that are readily available in his everyday life, Stöckli places an emphasis on all that may be transformed with a combination of the hands and the mind. Therefore it follows that his artworks are crafted sculptures, and also high grain photography of enviable composition, but so too that they are an extension of the artist themselves. These are works that are novel, distinctive and fun. Working with untreated softwood, building materials, and found objects such as skateboards, Stöckli presents a fresh new layer of expression by lifting away veils of discarded meaning. The artist has an interest in the tools readily available around him too, for example the passport style photo-booth by his studio, that allows for straightforward documentation of his artistic endeavours, tracing the progress of time and the accompanying changes to reality. Those photos, spat out into life by an uncaring but ultimately reliable object are incorporated into new artworks with a striking consistency. It is as if Stöckli, through persistence and patience, has been able to gain a mastery over his environment and shape it in such a way that benefits his own style of expression.

A WHIMSICAL GATEWAY TO THE PAST THROUGH THESE ECLECTIC PORTALS.
Inspired by architectural forms from the ancient world through art nouveau to postmodernism, Chramosta’s works take fragments of history and recast them in unlikely ways. The resulting objects are fictional doors, gates, facades, bits of railings which harbour humorous attachment to reality through the integration of a door handle or other messages from the everyday. As a whimsical gateway to the past through these eclectic portals, Chramosta’s sculptures turn historical tropes upside down.

FRAGMENTS OF BANAL IMAGES AND GRAPHIC ELEMENTS ARE DISLOCATED FROM THEIR ORIGINAL CONTEXTS.
David Knuckey’s process and material-oriented practice explores how abstraction disrupts our visual associations, leaving us in free-fall. Blurring the lines between abstraction and figuration, Knuckey’s works do not arise out of a preconceived image or goal. Instead, his artworks often take aspects of various forms and images drawn mainly from pop culture and various sub-cultures, merging, and transforming into new abstract forms. Mostly, Knuckey uses fragments of banal images and graphic elements, dislocating them from their contexts reducing their symbolic cues by simplifying them. The only remaining thread linking them to their origin could be in the title of the work, a small indentation, or simply a figment of our imaginations in our attempts to rationalise. Working in diverse media, from acrylic paint to wax, resin, wood, plaster and plastics, his works are created in series. In this process of repetition, he searches for the artwork, unsure about its outcome, his recurring actions determine the final form.

WE SEE MORE WITH OUR MINDS THAN OUR EYES.
Patricia Bucher is interested in the layered interpretation of signs, symbols, and pictorial forms. Unfolding like a piece of postmodern architecture, her drawings, watercolours, sculptures, and kilims (woven carpets), create non-hierarchical worlds and situations, delineating conventional ideas of subject and object. Each work playfully questions the notions which made the human-led subject the only relevant perspective. In the background of Bucher’s practice is rigorous research into semiotics and the relationship between perception, reality, rationality and understanding. We approach the world with concepts and everything we see is filtered through that lens. However, something can happen that makes us shift our lens and suddenly, we are looking at the same object, with a different perspective. The signs and symbols of everyday life, for example traffic signs, have given us the rules of the road, the rules through which we perceive our reality. Yet, those perceptions can shift so quickly and ambiguously, and it is in that moment that Bucher catches us. Her intricate works carefully denote that moment when perception can shift, usually unobserved, leaping across demarcations into a world where we see more with our minds than our eyes.

WHICH OLD WITCH?
Maria Guta sings a spell that spans nostalgia, identity and satire. Born in Bucharest, Guta is obsessed with a collective identity built by a culture of movie watching and celebrity media. Since 2020, the artist has created a parallel artistic practice with Lauren Huret to frame new questions about the limits of the self, and better explore the edges of identity. We are introduced to a mood we immediately recognize, familiar and friendly, rooted in the 1990’s and slowly seeping unconsciously into our lives. The strong visual aesthetics that permeate Guta ’s work is richly cinematic and contains a complex oeuvre in the colour palate alone. Utilising video, performance, and social media, the artist examines digital culture, online persona construction, and the influence of media on individuals and behaviour. Looking out of the East and into the West at a pivotal moment towards the end of the 90s and in the early 2000s, Guta’s fertile mind has grown upon a diet of candid celebrity images, commercialized media, and punchy cinema, and they sling ever more relevant new media artworks that address the beauty and the dilemmas of the era.

EVA ZORNIO / PRESENTING DATA ON DEATH, ENTROPY AND AUTHORITY.

Once, though long ago, the great scientists were also great artists and philosophers. Somewhere along the line, the method of scientific inquiry became detached from the creative process, and the act of creation became antithetical to the pursuit of absolutes. Fascinated by the act of creation, Eva Zornio strives to reconcile a cultural divide by conducting an ongoing investigation into what it means to be able to perceive. Having established an artistic practice rooted in her studies in biology and later in neuroscience, Zornio conducts research studies that blend rigorous methodological inquiry with a studio practice to form her approach to art making. The artworks themselves are stirring and soothing, uncanny and uncomfortably intimate in equal measures - data is gathered and presented within a defined framework, lending an authoritatively factual tone to the inherently subjective experience of viewing art. The slippage between what an artist creates and what a viewer perceives is a key component to the artist’s practice. Yet the way in which one can experience art is entirely fictional, as a viewer creates a narrative pattern through which to understand the work, be they in two dimensions or within the walls of an installation. Eva Zornio creates works that reach out in an attempt to understand the viewer, even as the work is being understood. In the process, the artist has built a bridge between two opposites, dissolving a centuries old dichotomy that exists between the creative arts and the scientific method.
