Hi everyone,
It’s that time of the week again for a quick flashlight tip.
Honestly, I used to be pretty unclear about what “waterproof” really meant on a flashlight. 😅
When I saw labels like IPX7 or IPX8, I just assumed it could handle a decent amount of water. But I never really knew the actual difference between the ratings or how far the protection went.
After asking our product designers at the factory and checking the specs more carefully, here’s what I learned:
💧 IPX4: Protects against water splashes from any direction — fine for rain or accidental splashes
💦 IPX5 / IPX6: Can handle stronger water jets — better for heavier rain or outdoor use
🌊 IPX7: Suitable for temporary immersion (usually up to 1 meter for 30 minutes)
🔒 IPX8: Designed for longer or deeper immersion, but the exact depth and time depend on the manufacturer’s rating
One important thing to remember:
⚠️ An IP rating is based on laboratory test conditions. It doesn’t mean the flashlight can be used however you want without limits.
If the seals get damaged, the tail cap isn’t tightened properly, or the charging port cover is left open, the waterproof protection can drop significantly.
And never charge a flashlight while it’s still wet. 🔌💧
I put together a full guide covering battery safety, heat management, waterproofing and other practical tips. You can read it here if you’re interested:
