I recently had the pleasure of speaking with students at Concordia International School Shanghai, sharing my journey from Central Saint Martins to building a design-led business in Asia with Pinyin Press.

We explored how creativity can develop into a sustainable career, the role of design thinking in today’s economy, and the realities of “commercial creativity” - turning ideas into something tangible and commercially viable.

We also touched on the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the value of continual learning - and the willingness to keep evolving over time.

It was especially meaningful to receive feedback like this:
“This talk helped me understand and feel less confused or worried about my future path because she said that “degrees don’t determine where you go.” Instead, they are just a stepping stone for the future opportunities and learning you will pursue.”

Conversations like these are a reminder of how valuable it is to share real-world experiences with the next generation - and how much we can learn from their perspectives in return.

This weekend I took part in Mentor Walks in Shanghai as a mentor.

Founded by Michelle Garnaut, Mentor Walks brings together women for professional development, practical career guidance, and knowledge-sharing. Its simple and effective format creates space for direct, practical conversations.

During the session, I shared experiences across entrepreneurship, business start-up, and business development, along with practical approaches to setting growth targets and navigating new markets.

Around 10 years ago, I joined Mentor Walks as a mentee, finding it a valuable platform for business advice and support from experienced professionals. It’s great to now contribute as a mentor and support the development of Shanghai’s women’s business community.

The questions from mentees were insightful and a good reminder that mentorship is often a two-way learning process.

Thank you to BritCham for hosting, to IPWS and to Eloise Zhang and Marie Chavanon for organising Saturday’s event.

Jumping on the nostalgia trend and looking back at a decade ago. 2016 was such an exciting year for Pinyin Press.

Our now-iconic Dumpling Salt & Pepper Shakers received a Hong Kong Smart Gifts Design Award. Pinyin Press was named Designer of the Year. Orlando Bloom wore a Pinyin Press T-shirt while promoting one of his films - and we even photo-bombed Usher’s birthday selfie (shout-out to )!

Creatively, 2016 saw us launch our very first screen-printing workshops at and it’s lovely looking back at some now-archived designs - the chirping cricket childrenswear, our Year of the Monkey tea towel, and the beautiful ceramics made in Jingdezhen.

I remember 2016 as a year full of energy and optimism, and of the exciting entrepreneurial spirit of Shanghai. The Pinyin Press collection of that period also offers a visual reflection of my experiences in Shanghai at that time.

We’re enjoying the journey we’re on, guided by the same ethos - creating cross-cultural designs that inspire through stories of everyday life.
